VBC – Thursday Evening 8-16-18
I want to emphasize right on the back while you're taking your Bibles and I want you to turn to Romans chapter 11. We're going to be there tonight, uh in the Bible study. Um, you know, first of all, let me say I have enjoyed being here so far. It's been glass. I love the laughter. I love the joy of the Lord that's very unique and and and very evident in your life.
And thank the Lord I think that's because people who are not focused on themselves are happier people, you know, and people that are focusing on what so to be around a whole group. Like this is a is really a great blessing and as you know, not every church is like that it's also uh good to see that well here tonight, you know, I know they supposed to be here, but he came anyway and uh, so and and uh, and then Jennifer.
Jennifer she went to uh, there she is. Okay, and we've known her for years or thankful and some of the others, uh that we have got to know over the years. I BJ. I'm not going to say uh anyting much about that just to say it's a seven-year-old mission that was started by uh, man who was raised in a as a rabbi.
Uh, and he was studying to be a rabbi came to New York City doctor garden house. I heard him when I was a 17 year old boy give his testimony met with him talk with him and what a gracious man of God, he had to write View and the view of dr. Goran house was this the responsibility for reaching the Jewish people around the world that numbers over 14 million people, uh now is lies at the door of the local church.
When I read that in his book, I realized that is that's organization. I can work with because that is the command of God. The local church is given the command, uh to reach everyone with the gospel. Uh, it is the command give it to local church and reaching out vote to both the Jew and the Gentile and so we're glad to be here tonight.
I want you to focus tonight on chapter, uh 11, but I want to begin by telling you that. As I travel around I run into a lot of different things that really work against not only reaching uh people in general but especially reaching Jewish people with the gospel in the last few weeks. I've been working.
Uh with a difficult problem. I know you guys don't have those columns your vision, you know, very well and and uh, and it has to do with the fact that there has been some different theology that has come in uh to uh in this situation and that theology is a little bit mixed up but it leans more toward a covenant theology, uh, as opposed to more of a dispensational type of.
To the word of God and as I've been looking at this and and and reviewing it, I understand that that when you are your theology is is not correct. It has an impact on your evangelism not only to the Gentiles but especially to the Jews for instance. Let me give you this by way of introduction. Uh, there are basically three principles.
Uh that's divided of covenant theology, uh and and dispensational Theology and I'm not going to get into that too much tonight, but it really goes with my message out of the word of God. Number one is that uh it it's the beginning of the church. When did the church actually begin that did the church exists in the in the Tanakh in the Old Testament?
Uh, and if it did what does it look like were Jews and Gentiles together in what we know of as the church in the Old Testament covenant theology would say that it does dispensational theology would say no the church began, uh, in in the New Testament, uh there, uh with the decoration of Christ and in the book of Acts when the Holy Spirit came, uh, and and and baptized Believers into the body.
That's one and that affects your next thing because if you believe that the church began in the Old Testament, then you have to pretty much approach the scriptures in a different way. Your hermeneutics will be different the way you interpret the scripture, but let me give you example if you uh, if you decide that, uh, Israel is part of the church in the Old Testament then you have to.
Spiritualize or allegorized your approach to scripture. And so you're very way that you interpret scripture changes. And so uh for those that I know you're not like this but uh for those that approached the word of God for more of a covenant theology. They have to at some point spiritualize or allegorize, uh, certain text and certain words.
Let me give you an example Israel. Israel Israel will be so different if you approach it and you're not looking at for more of a dispensational Viewpoint, then you got to approach Israel in more of a spiritual spiritual way so that when you see Israel you you're not really talkin about the nation of Israel, but you're actually talkin about now the church and especially in eschatology and in things to come and it changes your whole view of things.
You know, we're not careful we could do the very thing even inadvertently in our in our speaking and you guys allow young preachers. You have to be so careful for instance approaching the word Jerusalem. Be careful that when you talk about Jerusalem, you're talkin about Jerusalem. Amen. Okay. So Jerusalem is Rusev.
And by the way, uh are they it is a wonderful thing to go to the city of Jerusalem to place that Christ that God placed his name. And so Jerusalem Israel, you'll approach Israel and the name and the and all of a sudden you're not talkin about Israel, but you're talkin about the church, uh in the things to come and if you do that, you're actually approaching the word of God from two different angles one, you're approaching it from a historical grammatical, uh interpretation and another point for the allegory type of approach in interpreting scripture and you can't use both.
Both do not work. Uh, you have to choose one or the other especially when it has to do with the nation of Israel. So that's two major things. But tonight I want to zero in on one that I believe that goes with this particular passage of scripture. And that is one of the reasons why that some people uh will hold two more of a covenant theology.
They believe that their main purpose. And of way that God is glorified the primarily the way that God is glorified. Is that is that people come to Christ? The elect are come to Christ. They're sold out and they're saved by the grace of God. And so this is the way that God is glorified. Now, we could say they're right.
God is glorified through souls coming to Christ man. And it's a wonderful primary way that God is glorified where the Lord is glorified. But you know what God is glorified in many ways. God is glorified through his creation Psalms chapter 19 verse 1 the heavens declare the glory of God and so God is glorified by his creation.
God is glorified through a holy living and and and people that choose to live a holy life that glorify the Lord in their life. God is glorified in our worship. God is glorified through many ways. God is glorified by his sovereignty and the way that he approaches controlling Nations and how that he moves Nations.
God has been glorified through Israel. Can we can agree with that? But Israel was never a total believing Nation Israel has always been somewhat of a stiff neck Nation, but God has glorified himself through that Nation even with the fact that they haven't always obeyed him. I'm thankful that God can glorify himself through US many times when we're not always the most faithful but God in his sovereignty Glory he will glorify himself through his praise the Lord for that.
So God glorify himself this time coming. Where God is going to glorify himself in the recreation and the renewal of this Earth. Are you looking for the day that we have the millennial kingdom of God? I'm so looking forward to that. I was listening to this song being sung and that's where my mind was going how that one day every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord na Bible says that there's coming a day, uh and in Zakaria.
Where it says even the bridal the Bells around the horse's bridle will ring Gloria Holiness to the Lord as Zachariah chapter 14 in Isaiah. It says that they'll be roads. That would be roads named Holiness. Wow. Can you imagine going down Holiness Lane in the millennial Kingdom? Uh, no Billboards that would bring any dishonor to the Lord at all.
Uh, but there would be a pure Holiness. That's the that's the data we're looking for. So God will glorify himself through the remaking and the millennial Kingdom on this Earth so that the whole earth will glorify the Lord so God glorify himself. But today we want to make sure that we bring the maximum amount of glory to the Lord Jesus Christ.
Amen. And this is done by by obeying God in his word. In how we are to go forth and do the commission that God has given us Romans chapter 1 and verse 16. I'm sure you've heard it many times. I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ or Christ for it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believeth to the Jew first and also to the Greek, I have a friend that just started a company a few years ago he named.
Uh, his company is 323 Sports. It's after Colossians 3:23, uh talked about whatsoever. You do do it heartily as unto the Lord and his motto. Is this do it right not just do it, but do it right. I like that. Hey the company's doing great because they've taken this bottle and they're they're not only a Christian company, but they're trying to do things.
Right and when we approach missions and evangelism, we not only need to do it. But we need to do it right because when we do it, right then God gets maximum glory and that's and that comes to the Lord not just through the salvation of souls, but it unfolds his eternal purpose in this world today and the Apostle Paul in Romans chapter 11 is really speaking about this.
So let's go down through the scripture here for a few minutes at speak about why the church should focus why we should all Focus. On reaching both the Jew and the Gentile, uh with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. I'll say this that when we were in South Africa a whole first church, that wasn't a Jew in it.
There were all it was black South Africans and we loved him dearly and we still go back to that church. We reached the Gentiles right along with the Jewish people side-by-side. God wants us to reach both. Do you realize that there are only really two groups of people on the face of this Earth you say what group of people you caught two were called to every group of people amen, but we're called basically to win two basic groups of people Jews and Gentiles to have to reach them with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ.
So when we have the Great Commission and it commands us to go into every nation where to go into every nation and to reach the Jew and the Gentile of every single nation because if we leave one out then we're really only accomplishing 50% of the commission, which is reaching one half of the people groups because it's the Jew and the Gentile both and so it's very important because this is God's plan.
Let's look at Romans chapter 11. God is focusing on Israel here the world today is focused on Israel and in Romans chapter 11, this new testament chapter is intended by God through the Apostle Paul to be the guideline for Gentile Christians and how to deal with God's chosen people today spread around the world and they of Israel, by the way, you say where are the Jewish people saying ran into them down at the store?
I was in line at a archaea the other day and I was uh, not like here what. All these said I don't go all these very often. Thank you Mary. I'm in line and I have cherries of on my counter and uh, and they're wonderful just look at cherries and the guy behind me said uh index he said well, there's a nice cherry.
He said I haven't seen cherries like that since I was a kid and I said wow, that's good. And I've turned around and said, where are you from? You said Jerusalem, I was born in Jerusalem. I like wow, this is cool. And so the lord always put you together right with at such opportunity to speak to this event.
I ended up giving them my cherish, you know, but anyway, uh, and and uh, But God will always always put us in contact to reach both Jews and Gentiles as he brings them into our life. If we're open to that and God wants us to know how to deal and why to deal with the nation of Israel the church should love the Jewish people along with the Gentiles.
There should be a deep love for God's chosen people. Uh, and we see this in chapter 11 verse number one. The Bible says I say then. Hath God Cast Away his people and the answer to that as God forbid. God forbid his people and in the Apostle Paul say for I am Ezra light of the Seed of Abraham of The Tribe of Benjamin.
God has not Cast Away his people versus to which he foreknew. Well not uh, not what the scripture saith of Elias. How you make it intercession to God against this saying Lord, they have killed thy prophets and digged down thine altars and I'm left alone and they seek my life. So the Apostle Paul, uh is quoting here when Elijah after the uh contest of Mount Carmel and he was alone and he felt uh that he was the only one standing but the Lord said no, he said, I you're not alone.
I have reserved to myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal. You know, I I was talkin with my secretary today and we're opening up reopening of the new Everlasting Nation Museum that uh, emphasizes the tool of Israel and and it talks about the Feast of Israel. And then there's a section where there is a holocaust section in that Holocaust section.
We're going to have testimonies of of Jewish people who not only uh, who escaped the Holocaust But ultimately who came to know the Lord Jesus, Through uh through those troubles and even later and there are literally hundreds of testimonies that we've been given of Jewish people that have come to know Jesus Christ as their savior even not only through the Holocaust but since days, uh pass who have people who have given them Bibles and things to come know and so God is saying here, uh that he's not Cast Away his people he still saving the Jewish people.
God has not. Totally rejected the Jewish people for salvation. Paul is saying here if there's no salvation. What about me? God has not Cast Away. His people God is still calling the Jews for salvation. And this is to calling you remember in the book of Acts when uh the early Church in Chapter 2 and when the gospel was given the Bible says that there was a 5,000 that were saved all Jewish.
And then later you see there's multitudes that were saved all Jewish the whole the whole early church was all Jewish and God is still saving the Jewish people why for his glory God wants the glory and so he saved as saving Israel, and it does bring maximum glory to God when Jews and gentiles. Are being saved so God is still calling the Jewish people for salvation.
This is the calling but there's this a confusion on what you look at chapter 11 verse number 7 what then Israel has not obtained that which he seeketh for but the election hath obtained it and the rest were blinded. What is the Jewish people? What are they seeking for? Well, many of them are seeking for the righteousness, but they're trying to obtain it by the law turn one page back and look at verse number 31 in chapter 9 the Bible says but Israel, which followed after the law of righteousness have not attained to the law of righteousness why wherefore because they sought it not by faith.
But as it were by The Works of the law, they stumbled at the stumbling block the Lord Jesus Christ and they're not seeking it by faith, but they are seeking many of them to want that righteousness and they need to message but there's this confusion between Israel and the church, uh, because of the belief that God is finished with them.
The confusion has led to over the centuries. Neglect of reaching the Jewish people with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. Look at verse number 11 of chapter 11. The Bible says I say them have they stumbled that they should fall God forbid, but rather through their fall salvation is come unto the Gentiles for the provoke them to jealousy.
So God's purpose. In reaching the Gentiles with the gospel is to provoke the Jewish people that they might come to the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved also the purpose of Salvation is plenteous in the word of God, but one of the main purposes is that they would be uh, given as a person that would provoke them to jealousy that they might come to know the Lord Jesus Christ.
Look at verse number 14. I speak to you Gentiles inasmuch as I'm an apostle of the Gentiles. I magnify my office. I love you Apostle Paul. Here's the Jewish Apostle who is saying my goal is to reach the Gentiles with the gospel. But I magnify my work to the Gentiles why I lifted up so that I might reach the Jewish people with the gospel also that I might provoke them.
To jealousy looking first of all 14 if by any means I may provoke to emulation or the jealousy then which are my flesh and might save some of them you got some of you are headed South Africa. We were there in the early 2000 and we were able to plant a church in the near the Jewish Community right into Jewish Community.
I remember there we having Services there, uh in the evening sometimes an evening we'd be right they are singing the songs that some of that you sang tonight. And we would have the windows open and we'd be singing to the tops of our voices and we be playing and hopefully the joyful turns were coming out and right there outside there would be Jewish people having a bar mitzvah right around us or gathering and we thought sing louder we want them to hear the courses and and the words of the songs, uh, while we were there just recently we've dedicated the new church.
I was sharing this with the past. And as we were in the Jewish Community there, uh the God gave us and by the way, there's nothing impossible with God we pray we used to walk by this building and say God what this be a wonderful place to have the church one day and God gave us the building and it's a big church building that sits in the middle of for synagogue.
And uh and on that Saturday as we were getting prepared to have the first dedication service on that Sunday, excuse me. Um, we uh, we were there and the Jewish people are heading into the synagogues and we were lifting up a bell by a crane putting the bell in the bell tower restoring this old building an orthodox.
Jew walked up to me stands for Simon. He's watching us put the Bell up before he goes into the synagogue and I look over and he says wow. The church is back alive. Again. That's what he said to me. And I said, yes sir. It is and he said this is wonderful. That's a did you just say that I didn't say that but he said this is wonderful and and as he turned around and walked into the church, I can remember thinking about heart.
These are the people that we need to provoke to jealousy. These are the people that need Christ, but they need to see in our lives. So as we go about. Winning Gentiles to the Lord we need to do that with in mind that we need to promote Israel, uh to come to the Lord Jesus Christ. Also the purpose of salvation for the Gentile Christians will provoke the Jewish people to jealousy jealousy is a way that the Messiah, uh that they rejected can change, uh their life and as they View and see how our life has been changed the commitment.
Looking for uh chapter 11 verse number 16. So whoever says fourth the firstfruits be holy the lump is also holy and if the root be holy so are the branches and if some of the branches were broken off and thou being a wild Olive Tree where grafted in among them and with them partaketh of the root and fatness of the Olive Tree stop, isn't it?
Wonderful that Gentiles could be grafted in to the root. I can receive and that which was was intended for the Commonwealth of Israel. But we received that through the grace of God, man. And so he's saying these were broken off but look what happened boast in verse 18 boast not against the branches, but if thou boast not the fruit, but the root but the root thee that will say then the branches were broken off that I might be grafted in well.
Because of unbelief they were broken off and thou standest by faith be not high-minded. So he say but fear I think the one of the reasons why the Lord put that in the scripture was to warn their Gentiles about ignoring and raising themselves up above those, uh that were the natural branches. And he's saying fear because if they were if they were broken off, what about you in verse number?
21 God spared not the natural branches take heed lest. He also spare not thee and I believe what he's saying here is that if you're not careful. Uh, the very blessings that you can enjoy by being grafted in and the gospel that's be given and could spread God can remove that from your midst. Not that you would lose your salvation or anything like that, but God could take the blessing off because don't lift yourself up in Pride.
The natural branches are the Jewish people. You've been grafted-in so we don't need to be proud, but we need to be thankful. Amen. Thankful to the Jewish people that God allowed them even to be broken off that we might be grafted in behold therefore the goodness and severity of God verse 22 and then which fell severity but toward thee goodness if thou continue in his goodness, otherwise thou shall be cut off and they also if they abide the not still in unbelief shall be graffed in for God is able to graft them in again.
Amen. Sovereign God powerful God is able to graft the Jewish people back in as they placed their faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ. So the Apostle Paul accepted this call to reach the Gentiles with the gospel through this and through the salvation of the Gentiles. They would our come to know the Lord Jesus Christ his very people God answered this call to reach the Gentiles as a motivation for that.
But there is this commitment that that Israel was cut off but God is committed to the nation of Israel looking for some uh 60 as we read that he stood the first fruits are holy. But without the most because God, uh is one day going to gather them in looking for so much 24 for if that were cut off of out of the Olive Tree which is Wild by nature and where graphic contrary to the nature into a good Olive Tree how much more shall these which be natural branches be grafted in uh their own Olive Tree and he goes on to say for I would not burn that you should be ignorant of this mystery and that is the mystery.
The Mystery of the church Jew and Gentile together lest she should be wise in your own conceits that blindness in part is happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles, uh, come in and I love the next verse and so all Israel shall be saved. Now. What does that mean? That doesn't mean that that all of Israel from time is turn TV is going to experience salvation dirt under another Covenant know.
They have to come to know the Lord Jesus Christ just like every Gentile they have to come to know the Lord but there is this concentration and there's promise that God that God will bring the nation of Israel one day to himself. Amen. And even today we're seeing that Remnant the prophecy tells us that God will open the eyes of the Jewish people for the gospel blindness is apart right now.
Now there will be a Remnant that will be saved. Amen. And during the tribulation time, there will be 144,000 Jewish people. Now, this is when you've got to make sure your hermeneutics are right or you can come up with anything. But 144,000 Jewish people 12,000 out of every tribe and there's Jewish people were Advanced eyes the world during the tribulation time, and they'll be multitude of gentiles.
And Jews that will come to know the Lord Jesus Christ through that time, uh from every nation the Bible says so it's a wonderful thing. Think about it. God used the Jews to bring the gospel to the Gentiles. Then God uses the Gentiles during the gospel to the Jews and in alternately God's going to use the Jews to bring the gospel to the Gentiles just back and forth over and over again.
Why because he is Glory. He will glorify himself through that but how will the 144,000 how will the Jewish people in the tribulation time? Come to know him, uh through this time and be the advances. Well, I believe that God will use the the efforts that even being made now, you know, I was listening the other day about a testimony and this is what I believe when I answer the call to try to reach both the Jew and the Gentile with the gospel.
I remember thinking this. Would it be possible if one day I could be out handing Bibles out, uh and and and reaching the Jew and Gentile by the way. This is how we used to Advantage sighs that South Africa. I would have Gentile tracks in one pocket Jewish traction. Another pocket. I'd always have to remember which one and I I would have Bibles in my back pocket Hebrew scriptures and one side, uh, John Romans in the other side, and I'd be out on the streets.
And if I ran into a Jewish person they got this one amen. And if I ran into a gentile person they got this track and I often thought what would happen if after I handed the track to that Jewish person. Handed the Bible all of a sudden the Rapture of the Lord took place. Then that be a great thing if we were out witnessing when the Rapture took place and the Rapture of the church the case and we were called up the meeting with the Lord.
I believe that God would use his word during those period of times uh to bring the Jewish people to himself through that time also along with Gentile. So the labor is not wasted even if we don't see them come maybe right now to get the word of God out to both the Jew and the Gentile right now.
That's what the Jewish people need a worldwide. So there's this constant concentration that the God will bring the Jewish people to himself, but how shall there be saved Romans chapter 10 spells that out. I want you to look there quickly, uh, just back one page. As dr. Slightly used to say in your Scofield reference Bible back one page.
Okay, uh chapter 10 and verse number 10. The Bible says for with the heart man believeth unto righteousness. And with the mouth confession is made unto salvation for the scripture. Saith whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed for there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek for the same Lord over all is Rich unto all that call upon him.
For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved. How will they be saved in verse of aforetime 14 how then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed the Jewish people are in darkness along with the Gentiles. Shall they believe in him whom they have not heard. The Jewish people are basically unreached around the world, uh because of the lack of witnessing to them.
They need to hear the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. How shall they hear without a preacher and how shall they preach except they be sent and tonight sitting in this congregation are joyful people who many of you are being sent around the world and you are being sent. To both the Jew and the Gentile around the world Amen.
I wherever you go, whatever City you minister in and then as God allows you to establish local churches around the world. You need to establish churches that will have a burden to send missionaries out from their church that will reach both the Jew and the Gentile with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and say something to you.
Every single Christian is called to take the gospel to the Jew and the Gentile every missionary no matter where they're going is called to take the gospel to provoke the Jew and the Gentile you bet you say while there's not many Jews here how you better be careful? Sometimes God just sends them to you.
Amen. Mountains of North Carolina, there's just not many Jews in the mountains of North Carolina not where I was. Anyway, I remember coming home one night and and the Jewish I my phone rang. I was on deputation ever done all-nighter o'night got in at five o'clock put the kids to bed. I was running a Christian School and on deputation.
Can you believe it? And uh at that was probably a well ran Christian School by the way. Yeah. Anyway, and I and I. I after I finished I went to bed at seven o'clock my phone rings. Hello. Hello. Who is this? My name is Ty Ty said yes, I'm down at the police station and an officer told me to call you and said what and he said yes, and I said, where are you from?
He said I'm from Israel. He said I need some help. That's what I'll beat you now I got to tell you the whole story. But after meeting with a couple, I've come to find out they're police officers from our church and this police officer had told him to call me if I needed if needed help. He didn't know it was out all night, but I went and met him and after two meetings eat.
I came to know Jesus Christ as the Saviour a Jewish guy in the middle of the mountains of North Carolina. God can do that. God will do that. If we have a heart to reach them whether it be just our self or sending missionaries around the world to them. Let me finish this. So there is this commission God did blind the Jewish people but through their blindness.
We have come to know the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. We owe a great debt to the Jewish people. But as for the glory of God, I will end with this scripture in chapter, uh, 11 and look in verse number 33. As God as the Apostle Paul pleads for his people the Apostle to the Gentiles going to the Gentiles but saying don't forget the Jews.
He says, oh the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God how unsearchable are his judgments and his ways past finding out and he's talkin about this in the context of Jews and Gentiles coming to Jesus Christ as their savior together in the body of Christ for who have known the mind of the Lord or who at then it's counselor.
Or who has first given to him and it shall be recompensed unto him again. And then verse 36 sums it up all four of him and through him and to him are all things to whom be glory forever. Amen. You know what? I don't think we're going to understand this until we come back and we come back with Jesus Christ.
And we're not coming back to it Lanta or two. What's that town? You live in uh, ball gown. Yeah, we're coming back to Jerusalem folks and when Jesus Christ comes in the sense and his feet is not going to touch Stone Mountain his fee is going to touch the Mount of Olives and then when the Angels bow when they realized.
Unsearchable wisdom of God with Jews and Gentiles in the body of Christ and coming back to the nation of Israel into the city of Jerusalem, and he marches in to the to rule for 1,000 years from the from the city of Jerusalem and the maximum glory to God that spreads and flows like a river throughout the whole earth and it's going to be because.
God's Sovereign plan was fulfilled in reaching the both the Jew and the Gentile with the gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. And my question to you tonight. Is this do you want to be a part of that? You can be a part of that and all you have to do is not forget the juice as take that gospel to the Jew and the Gentile wherever you go.
