VBC – Sunday Evening 8-19-18
Take your bibles if you would go with me to Isaiah chapter 5, 45 years ago I skipped church on Sunday morning. We got married on Saturday night and I was not spiritual of show up church on Sunday Morning by the eagle on Saturday night. So this year we're going to skip Sunday night. Just trying to even even the kill so go get through with it now and skip church tonight.
That was Robert Kennedy feels joke for me this one when I made mention of the fact that 45 years ago. I had skipped Church. Isaiah 5 if you would, you know, you've been uh, you've been in the Bible a long time you've been we've been going through the scriptures and you know that Israel is just not what they ought to be Judah is not what they ought to be.
Isaiah chapter 5 God is actually going to call on his man to write and sing a song and that song is going to be a judgment song and the question is going to be asked what more could I have done? What more could you ask of our god? What more could you ask of him Ruth? Me Isaiah 5 3 if you would and now Owen habitants of Jerusalem and Men of Judah.
Judge, I pray you between me and my Vineyard what could have been done more to my Vineyard what that I have not done in it wherefore when I looked at. It should bring forth grapes brought it forth wild grapes guys. Help me figure out something judge between me and my Vineyard. I did everything I could I don't know what more I could have done and I wouldn't looking for good grapes and they gave me wild grapes now path of Passage scriptures about Israel.
It's about Judah. It's about Jerusalem and it's not about us. But you are going to be hard pressed to ignore the parallels between us and Them the facts are that God has done so much for us as a church and I said chapter 5 and verse one. He makes it clear that it is a song. It says, uh down will I sing to my beloved a song of my well-beloved touching his Vineyard my well-beloved has a Vineyard in a very.
Fruitful Hill father. I pray that you would help your people. Now as we look at your word that would be clear to us what you were doing in your country among your people. They're not pray God that you would apply to our lives and help us to grow and mature and be what we should do B and I'll give you praise honor and glory for all you do in Jesus name.
Amen. First thing we'll look at is what God said that he did. Let's look at what God Said. He did look at Isaiah chapter 5 verse 2 the very first thing that he does and he the songs being sung. Maybe if you won't listen to the preaching you listen to the song My Way a lot of times. I think the myself if I could have just been a songwriter, I'd written the song that was good enough and you guys would have sung it over and over.
Instead of a message I get through preaching and it's over but look at this he sings a song and he says that Isaiah chapter 5 and verse 2. I fenced in my Vineyard. I took all the rocks out of my Vineyard. I planted the best vines in my Vineyard. I built a tower in my Vineyard to look over my Vineyard to watch over my Vineyard to take care of my Vineyard.
I put a wine press I did everything to make a great Vineyard and look at. For a few words in verse 2 and it brought forth wild grapes without me doing any of that in brought forth while grapes. I have put the choices fine. I have done everything that I could do and so in Isaiah 5 3 and 4. He says would y'all help me teach me what I did wrong teach me what I could have done that I haven't done.
How is it that the people that I've loved so much aren't producing. Now verse 3 you need to underline so you know who he's talkin about. He is talking about a country that country of Judah Judah or the two tribes of the South and Israel's of ten tribes of the north and he's talkin about Jerusalem.
That's the place where the temple was. That's the place where David was that's a place where God has chosen to make his City and he's saying to Israel that Vineyards Israel Judah at Vineyards Judah and he said guys I have done everything I know to do. In this chapter. God says I did everything I knew to do and all you did was wrong and the majority of the chapters built around the wild grapes.
Those are wild grapes. I'm afraid maybe a part of our lives, uh, and then God ends at chapter by saying I will judge you sin will have consequences. You will not get away with doing wrong. How's this special Vineyard compared to our church? I think it's a pretty clear teaching in the book of Isaiah talkin about Judah that God fully expected that what he invested ought to produce.
That God fully expected that where he invested there ought to be production. And if God put in they God expected return God has put in here God has sent people that have given great amounts of money. God has sent people that have put in great hours of teaching God is foot people that have been in many hours of prayer and God wants a return.
There's a second lesson. I think it's pretty clear here in the story as he talks about Judah. He bills all the. Hours he fits and then he built the wall around it. He put a tower in the middle of it. And basically I think one of the big lessons about what he does is that any damage that's going to happen in Jude is going to be from within not from without they had a wall around them.
They had been cared for they had been looked over and God built the wall. I think anytime God Church gets in trouble. We're so afraid of the world. It's amazing to me how many times uh Christians are afraid that the world's going to do something us. We're afraid that uh, the government's going to do something.
That's and they're going to come against us and I tell you I think we're probably a well fenced well-guarded Community God's gonna take care of his people, you know where the problems gonna be. Uh, Getting lazy getting carnal getting sensual getting away from God and allowing allowing sin to ruin our lives and our ministry.
Our church can never think that God is going to let us down. We will choose not to share our faith. We will choose not to evangelize and we will waste what God has given us if we're not careful. I'm gonna take the time because you know on a normal Friday night Sunday afternoon at five o'clock.
Y'all are semi woke up from your naps, but a couple of really good people at the stream already dozing and so I'm going to dance a jig and and do something to get you to wake up. But in Luke Chapter 13 Verse 6 and following Jesus uses the very same kind of picture when he talks about his Vineyard and he talks about a tree that's been planted there and he looked for fruit and he didn't find any fruit and then he said well once it wasted space why is it taking up minerals and nutrients?
Why is it covering the ground? And then the they said please give us one more year and if it doesn't produce will cut it down the truth is. We are never ever forget. God has been good to us. By the way. He brought in today. There were Filipinos here. There were African's here. There were rednecks here.
There were all sorts of people from everywhere here. God brought people here. God is the one who did the work and we must realize that God is doing a work. He's given us so much and we cannot let down our guard we cannot let the devil begin to rule and Reign and take over. It's easy to lose our focus on what God is doing now go with me if you would to Isaiah chapter 5 verse 8.
I will take the majority the message because I feel like in the passage of scripture. That's where God takes the majority the passage to talk about the wild grapes instead of the good grapes and he named six wild grapes six grapes and he didn't like him having and the first one is covetousness and we're in Alpharetta.
Look if you would at Isaiah chapter 5 and verse 8 woe to them that join house the house. Then light filled the field to there be no place that they may be placed alone in the midst of the earth if I could get enough money and buy all the land that such as my language. My daddy used to say he didn't want to own all the land in the on the world in the world.
He just wanted all of it to touch the is. Which is a pretty good sign he won't on the whole place, but they had the goal in the idea of gaining land gating riches gaining position. And then they would be free. They would be protected that have a boundary around them. But God's going to show them that no matter how much you have without him.
It won't produce. Look if you would at verse 9, the Bible says of a truth many houses shall be desolate even greater than fair. Nobody will live there and 10 acres of Vineyard shall yield one bath another words, you won't have Harvest Harvest. I'm pretty sure it was this morning that I saw an article about up to seven years and one harvest in a part of Australia.
You can have land you can have everything that ought to produce and if God takes back his Blessing in his power anytime. We want money for money. We're wrong anytime. We want money for our Comforts. We're wrong anytime. We want money to protect us. We're wrong. It's okay for God to give us money to use for him and for his honor and His glory, but it's wrong for us to take it the other way.
There are some Bible lessons taught. Go with me to Psalm chapter 49 verse 6. So I'm 49 in verse 6. Number one. We can't trust money. Every Christian has to know we can't trust money. The Bible says in Psalm 149. They that trust in their wealth and boast themselves and want to their riches. None of them can redeem their brother nor give God a ransom for him.
Okay, that was fun of you. Got you. I keep him from dying. I don't care how much money you got you're not keeping them out of hell money's not the solution. Jesus is the solution. The Bible says in Psalm chapter 62 and verse 10. It says if Rich is increased. Certain not your heart upon them God blesses us and we get money and we have to be afraid of that.
We have to be afraid of blessings because I don't want to take my eyes off of Jesus and put my eyes on stuff. I want to keep my eyes on Jesus. I want to honor Jesus with my life. Amen. But we God's blessing lots of us in this room. We got to be careful Colossians chapter 3 and verse 5, it tells us covetousness is idolatry.
Covetousness is idolatry. I think that in all honesty. We hate a Dollar Tree. We think it's wicked. We make fun of it until God says yeah. Well all y'all want stuff. That's a Dollar Tree all y'all won't stuff. That's idolatry. I think what might kill a church would be money. You know, you have to have it to build a Ministry.
You have to have money to do a work for God, but if you're not careful, you can become rich and have need of nothing like a laodicean church that lost all of God's blessings. We can never let that happen. That's the first Wild Grape that's mentioned here. Go to the second wall. Great verse 11. I don't want to make you mad but this is just exactly what the passage is talking about.
And the next one is drugs alcohol addiction. God hated drunkenness, Isaiah 55 verse 11 woe to them that rise up early in the morning that they may follow strong drink that continued into the night to wane until wine inflame them till wine inflame. Would you under unfollow strong drinking that verse which you underlining that verse till wine inflame them?
You do know I'm gonna prove it to y'all the Bible but in our day and time it's become more and more acceptable for alcohol to be a part of your life. And if you think it's okay to have your little drinks for you to be okay to play with that but in the Bible that stuff is scary stuff in the Bible that stuff is dangerous stuff.
The Bible says in Isaiah chapter 5 and verse 12 that that when they drink they only think about themselves they don't think about what God's doing Isaiah. 12 says the harp and the viol the tabret of the pipe and the wine they're in their face. They got lots of music and lots of wine and while they're having their party.
They are not thinking about the work of the Lord. They regard not the work of the Lord and they don't think about the operation of his hands partying while music wild food and beverages but God is far from their thoughts. That's what Isaiah said to him. Well, that sounds very much like America today.
Amen. Our young people go off to parties even if their home school or whoever they are, you know, wherever they gonna find some friends that hang out with some friends and end up in places where they may be participating in this and you're God's not pleased with that and Isaiah chapter 5 verse 12.
God said, that's why I'm going to take you into captivity. You guys have forgotten me and gotten you got involved with your alcohol. You got involved with your addictions you got involved with this stuff. I'm going to take you into Babylonian captivity because there is no knowledge of me. It says in verse 13 and you are famished your dried up with thirst.
You guys have forgotten me. You've allowed this alcohol. They're going to be taken into captivity by a foreign government has God's punishment for them not thinking about him. But can I just remind you because I do love you, if you keep messing with alcohol is gonna take you into captivity to if you keep messing with that, I'll call it's going to take you into captivity.
They don't understand God's greatness or God's power and even the rich men they have or thirsty and hungry because they messed around with what they ought not been. I don't want to see you an addict to drugs to household drugs to Medical prescriptions. I want to see you thinking about God. And considering him in the work of his hands verse 14 he said death and he'll have great power over them because of their sin in verse 14.
He said hell's enlarged herself and they're going down into it. It doesn't matter who they are big shots and little shot. And that's the thing about addictions. They don't care if you're a big shot in a rich million or poor person. They'll take you down. God warned them through that and God will be glorified.
You may party and ignore God he says to them. You may partying ignore God you may not even think about what he's doing but in verse 16, he will be exalted and he will be Sanctified and we'll give you a few more verses about alcohol just to make you good mad at me their Bible verses there was a time when our people were pretty scared of the stuff, but we stayed away from it.
Pretty good. I don't know what happened to us. So there's let me go ahead and say some things Proverbs Chapter 20 and verse 1 1 is a mocker strong drink is Raging and if you're deceived by that stuff, you're not a very smart person. And all the commercials and all the fun and everybody talkin may sound good.
But if you let that stuff to see if you you're not smart. We are not to be drunk with wine, but to be filled with the Holy Spirit Ephesians chapter 5 and verse 18 First Corinthians chapter 6 and verse 12 nothing not to take power over me. I don't want any drug. I don't want anything that would take power over me.
I will not be brought under the power of any. Let me read to you Proverbs chapter 23 and verse 29 if I can I
watch this so many times improve who half whoa who's hurting who has bad stuff happening in their life who has sorrow who has contentions fighting and fussing who has babbling who is wounded and there's no reason that they're hurting who has redness of eyes. They that tarry long at the wine. They that go to seek mixed wine.
Don't you even look at it when it's red when it gives its color in the cup when it moves itself because at the last it bites like a serpent and it stings like an Adder
it causes your eyes to see strange women. That's not your wife. It causes your heart to utter perverse things. It makes you like a guy who lays down in the middle of the sea and lays down on the top of the mass of the seat of the of the of the sailing ship you're up at the very tip top and again back and forth and back and forth.
You're laying up there in verse 35. It says they beat me and I wouldn't sick they beat me and I didn't feel it and tomorrow morning when I wake up. I'll go get some more beans. That's what alcohol and drugs will do to us. We are not to live. We're not to let our living getting away his coming.
We're not to let our living getting away of his coming. We talked about a Jesus who died for us. We also always talk about a Jesus who was coming for us. We are honestly we are of the opinion if we're Bible people that were temporarily here. We are honestly expecting at any moment to be taken out of here in Luke chapter 21 and verse 34.
He said take heed to yourselves that said any time your hearts be overcharged. You get out you lose control you mess up with your partying and your drunkenness and I'm worried about this life. And so Jesus comes back and you ain't ready for it. Stay away. Stay away. Stay away. It hurts you it messes you up it bothers you.
My last verse for you First Peter chapter 4 verse 3 if you ever get right with God and quit the drinking if you ever get right with God and quit the party and if you ever get right with God and leave the addictions, they won't even understand it. Your friends will be like what happened to you looking First Peter chapter 4 verse 3, they could have written this yesterday for for the time past of our life.
Many May suffice us to have brought the may be back in our past. We did what lost people do and we walked in partying and while sin and I desires an excess of wine and idolatry and now they think adverse for strange that you do not run with them and do the same silly crazy things you did before. So now they talk bad about you speaking evil of you.
Stay away from this Wild Grape. Stay away from something. God doesn't want his people participating in he hates our covetousness. He hates money being so important to us. He hates. He hates, uh, alcohol and partying and drugs and any of the stuff would take control being so important to us. That's what I say was preaching about the third wild great that he mentions if you would go with me to 518.
That's mocking God while they continue living in sin. It really kind of runs the gamut done it I I get a hunger for money and position and power and I want to be somebody that I want to enjoy the life. I bet I now able to enjoy and then I then now I used to be a good Christian and I used to serve God and I used to do right, but my money Lifted Me.
So I'm no longer think I ought to have to listen to them church people. I no longer think I'd have to listen to the pastor. I'm above that. Now. I got money now amazing what poor country people listen to what rich people listen to now I've got some money now, I'm going to go party because everybody in my position socially parties and now I'll take the next step and I'm going to start making fun.
I make fun of God Will Make fun of God. Look at you. Would Verse 18 woe unto them that draw Nick what he with cords of vanity and sin as it were with a cart rope. They are playing with sin is like man. I got a hold on sin now and I just keep playing the game. They're enjoying her sin. They're never considering what God thinks they even challenge God and say to him.
I don't know if I believe you if you're really real do something. Maybe when I was poor and dumb I could believe you but verse 19 says let him make speed and hasten his worked that we might see it. If you're really there God do something. That's how bad they've gotten their making fun of God playing with sin making funny by wants to do right and you're the butt end of every joke there is about people want to do right you are because you love God don't ever let the devil take you down that road.
Forth while Great mentioned is they would decide to redefine sin. Look if you would at verse 20, he said now you now you're going to say well that ain't sin I get to determine what sin is God doesn't look at verse 20 woe unto them that call evil good and good evil that put Darkness for light and light for Darkness a bitter for sweet and Sweet for bitter.
You see what happened there. They started off in their money and their pride and they got into their alcoholism and then they started making fun of God and the idea of sins. And then he said well, we just redefined. What sin is what is decide now? What real Sin is we will make our own definitions.
And so they have redefined marriage. They have redefined gender. They have redefined anything. They need to to feel good about their perversion. Uh read several times over the last month how they're going to try to make pedophilia a part of the late lesbian gay homosexual movement and it's something you're born with that.
No one should blame you for it. They're redefining that now and that's not what I said. You find out in Wall Street Journal and other news outlets. You can find out that they already talkin about that. Have you redefine sin if I redefined sin? Told me if you were to the Next One V grape as a chapter 5 verse 21, woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight.
Now all of a sudden you are big enough to make your own decisions and you're a full of arrogant Pride before you came home lie to God and say God, what's right God. What's wrong God? What do you want me to do God you decide what to do, but now I don't need God. And now I don't need God. I don't need God to tell me what to do.
I don't need God to direct my path. I know what to do. They got strong in their own eyes and prudent in their own sight. They were wise they don't need God.
I was there 5:22 spiritual corruption. Woe unto them which are Mighty to drink wine and Men of strength to mingle strong drink. I just wish you'd underline that this is actually a separate Sam but alcohol still here too. And by the way, can I ask you do something just as your friend and as your brother and as the guy who's the pastor of this church, why don't you do a study in the Bible about what God says about alcohol won't you just look up every verse about it.
Why don't you go find the first time it's mentioned in the Bible because the very first time it's mentioned in the Bible is causing problems won't you read it all the way through the scripture and if you don't know how to do that. Give us somebody let them help you do it will teach you how to do it.
You ought to get a Biblical attitude about it. Now, we're on sin while great number 6 and there's the alcohol involved in it chapter 5 verse 23, they took steps to take take others for their benefit. They're using their they're abusing people now. They justify the wicked for reward and take away the righteousness of the righteousness the righteousness of that guy.
Look at here. I'm going to take advantage of it because I can make money taking advantage of people. They have no respect for the word of God. They'll give you a verse 24.
The fires going to Devour the stubble the Flames going to burn everything up the roots a rotten the blossoms going up and dust why you should circle the word because they have Cast Away the law of the Lord and despise the word of the Holy One. They have decided I don't care what the Bible said.
It's an old book. Anyway, it was written a long time ago. It doesn't make sense. It's a historical book. It's an Antiquity. It's not something I need to listen to anymore. It has nothing to do with normal life anymore. I can understand why they say that because it has so much doing them a lot.
They're very uncomfortable has say hey man, no wonder they'd say that no respect and now God is. Angry verse 25 the anger of the Lord is kindled against his people and he's coming in judgment. Let me finish the passage of scripture with this. God will judge his people for the wild grapes. Look at Isaiah 5 number one thing he does is take away their protection
now go to and I will tell you what I'll do to my Vineyard. See I planted this Vineyard and I asked him to bring forth good things instead of bringing for good things. They brought forth wild grapes and they're not doing what I asked him to do and I put a lot of work in this and so let me tell you what my next step is.
I'm taking away the Hedge I'm breaking down the wall and they're going to be able to some but people are going to be able to walk in and stomp my Vineyard into the ground. But you know what to say is this is a prophecy that may it's really not about us. It is about God's going to bring foreign countries into Israel God's going to remove his hands of protection that hasn't let them to be conquered and they're going to be conquered the walls will be broken down.
The the temple is going to be burned down. Everything's going to be destroyed pagans are going to walk into the holy land and pagans are going to hold them off. And it's all because they chose those six while grapes over our God. These are harsh verses but they're here. So let's read them. God will destroy his own Vineyard.
God will destroy his own Vineyard five six. He said he will lay it waste and it will not be pruned or dig briers and Thorns will come up and I won't let it rain anymore. Look at that. For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel. Now you need to underline it. I'm not because see this is really prophetic and it has to do with prophecy and it's not as much about our churches is about Israel.
I mean we could make application to our church. But what happened? This is about Israel and it's real clear in verse 7. You need to underline House of Israel men of Judah House of Israel men of Judah God built this special group of people. He gave them everything they needed. He protected them he put the best in there he put a wine, press enter he put a tower in her he did everything and said take my word to the world.
Let people know who I am be my people. And they quit being his people and they quit being his people and so God said you won't be my people. I'll take the walls down. You won't be my people. I'll let you be destroyed. You won't be my people and I will take care of you. Look at the last of you would have verse 7 Isaiah 5 7 and he looked for judgment behold oppression for righteousness, but a cry God has whipped them my last thing before we close.
He brings other nations against him now if you're not a Bible person you think of coincidences, but if you're a Bible person, you don't think in terms of coincidences, if you're a Bible person, you're like, what's he doing? What's he doing? I know who's in charge. I know he's at work. So I want to show you about versus year.
The people have gotten very Wicked and Isaiah is just a preacher and this right here. I mean, we got the written word of God, but when he's saying all this he's saying it out of his mouth. He's preaching right here. He's singing a song and he's just a preacher and they're ignoring him and he's going all around the country said God's getting upset.
He said he's been real good to you. He said he built a great place. You out of Ministry for you, but you decided not to do what God wanted and you've been doing the opposite of what God want six things. I'll call your hand on right now. Six grapes are called whoa. Whoa whoa. Whoa, six times. I'll call your hand then he says but you aren't going to listen are you you aren't going to listen.
How are you? So God will come and destroy you and then he says that he'll do it by bringing another country against you. I mean we think well Germany rose up in Germany. Did her thing. We think well, Russia do this and China did this mm North Korea did this and gods up in heaven said old go ahead think what y'all want to thank but.
I am God look if you would at chapter 5 verse 26 and he will lift up an ends into the nations from a from far and we'll listen to them from the end of the Earth and behold they shall come with speed swiftly. You're in trouble. God's gonna bring another country against you. I like to say before we close great lesson for us to we're not the nation of Israel.
We're not Judah. We're not Jerusalem, man. Have we been blessed? Man has God done big stuff here, man. Is God put a wall around us? And it's somewhere along the way God's going to protect us from those guys out there. You don't need to worry. Well, I think they're going to pass laws going to put us out of business.
I'm not the least bit worried about that. You know, what I'm worried about I'm worried about us backslide and what I'm worried about I'm worried about us not praying. I'm worried about us not witnessing. I'm worried about us not giving I'm worried about us not obeying God because God will take care of them.
God will take care of them. But if we won't do right God can in New Testament terms remove our Candlestick, we don't have any idea that this what's going on. Let's your Bible person, but I know you are, you know, what happened today? This church was started God reached down and placed the Candlestick here, and he said there you got boys.
I'm going to give you power and light and working you. And here's what he said. I'll be there and I'll do a work amongst you and so every Sunday morning when your Sunday school teacher stands up to preach and teach in your class. And you're like, well, he's good. No, really all that good. There's just a Candlestick there.
I'm not trying to belittle our teachers and I sent up a preaching your label. This is good enjoying it. You might not think of it. It's just a Candlestick and they get up and they saying it's just a Candlestick and here's what God Said mess with me. I'll take the Candlestick back. And your church will die.
You'll still have feelings you'll have a attendance you may have thousands in attendance, but I won't be there and that Revelation chapter 3 and verse 20 says behold. I stand at the door and knock and you've heard that speaking about people that's not about people that's about Jesus being outside the church knocking on the church door saying hey y'all are a church and churches are about me, but you got me out on the sidewalk.
Could I come in? I was a 'he said guys if we don't do right you'll take down the walls and he will trample us. Let's do what God wants us to do we can never forget this. We are not our church. We're his church. We are not about what we like. We're about what he likes. We are not about anything more than honoring the god.
