VBC Sunday Evening 12/2/18
Let's go to our Bibles real quick Genesis chapter 6 Genesis chapter 6 verse 5. I believe it's verse 5. I'm trying to run through there real quick Genesis chapter 6 number 5 want to show you a truth that I've been studying a little bit and I just the Lord's kind of dealt with my heart.
Some of the students might know the story that we're going to talk about but Genesis chapter 6 verses 5. This is what the scripture says and he says and God saw. That the wickedness of man was great in the earth and get this and that every imagination that word imagination means it's basically him talking about every part of his DNA every part of his completely complete and it's not just your thoughts but his imagination of the thoughts of his heart were what.
Evil continually take your Bibles to skip over a couple chapters jump with me to judges are Genesis chapter 8 verses 21. This is what the scripture says and the Lord smelled a sweet savour and the Lord said in his heart. I will not curse the ground any more for man's sake and this is what God says.
For the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth. What is God that God know about us? Our nature when the psalmist David if you jump over to Psalms chapter 51 and verse 5, he says this 51 verse 5. He says this he says behold I was shapen in iniquity and in sin did my mother conceive me?
You know the Bible displays man, not as inherently good but as inherently evil. Jesus looked at man, and he says it's not that comes in that defiles the man. It's it's your heart that defiles the man. He says that in Matthew 17, he says where does fornication evil thoughts murders hatred where does all that come from?
He says it's for men. In Judges chapter 17. This is where we're going to be at. This is the story it kind of brings light to that. I taught this in my Sunday school class and brother Gardner. I asked what am I supposed to teach because. We usually go through a book and it's a lot easier when you have a book we have something and so he gave me some ideas he put out some stuff.
So I'm just going to run with this one. The scripture says in this and judges 17 verses 6 is what the scripture says. It's going to read you what the scripture says. in those days there was no king in Israel, but notice What man does. Every man did that which was right in whose eyes. I mean that's like being a Libertarian to the nth degree, right?
I do write for myself you do right for yourself, which is do right and it's all going to work out right? That's what will Adam Smith said, right? I don't know The Wealth of Nations know she's actually shaking my head. No, he's like no. Well the idea of you doing what's right for you and I doing what's right for me and we all works out.
How does that work? Judges 17 talks about that before we get there. I just want you guys to see the truth though Deuteronomy chapter 12 verses 5 and through 6, Deuteronomy 12 verses 5 through 6. He says this. I think it's very important for us to realize that and if you like to write in your Bibles and you want to judges 17, I would put Deuteronomy chapter 12 verses 5 through 6.
This is what the scripture says and though but unto the place. Which the Lord God shall choose out of all your tribes to put his name there even to the habitation Xiao you seek or shall you seek? Ye seek? And thither Thou shalt come and feather Thou shalt bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices in your ties and your Eve offerings in your hand and your vows and your Freewill offerings in your first things of your herds and your flocks.
What is God saying right there through Moses? That will be one place. Where I will be worshipped. When you come into this this this new land talking about the promised land. He says there will be one place and one place only. I'm going through comparative world religions that I don't want to get too far into it, but she ever think about Hinduism.
Where's their one place? You ever wonder why there's so many different gods in Hinduism. Because every village has their own God. There was no central place that they would all go to where they would all learn about. Does that make sense you do your thing. And then it was just a big after a while.
It was just a big compliation of all these peoples different religions from all these these Villages from all these different little small towns, whether it was on the on the ocean whether it was on the river with out in the farm, everyone had their own God so they have like these millions of gods, but God said to his people right around that time.
1400 Years BC 1450. He says there will be one place one place where you will worship me. In this story. There was a man back to judges. I know been jumping around a lot. But I hope you guys get to see this. There was a man that lived in Israel. He was a mountain man, and he apparently came from a lot of wealth.
Well his mother he had a mother and she had Eleven Hundred shekels of silver. And I think that must mean a lot back then because he mentioned it and this man whose name was Micah according to Judges chapter 17. He stole those Eleven Hundred shekels of silver and Micah one day overheard his mother cursing the person that stole this money now once you guys remember the main point.
What happens when you are left to yourself? What happens to mankind when they are left to themselves? Everyone does what is right in their own eyes what happens when that comes out? Well, Micah became very afraid because of the curse so he went to his mother and he told her that he stole these Eleven Hundred shekels of silver.
And get this as soon as his mother. Soon as he told his mother she blessed the Lord and she blessed her son. Maybe maybe that might not be the response that I was expecting of the Old Testament, right? I just stole Eleven Hundred shekels of silver from my mom and she's blessing me and blessing the Lord maybe the response and the Old Testament would have required may be a little heavy judgment for that type of crime.
But Michael restored this money, but the money to his mother nevertheless and when he gave the money or gave to his mother the money, this is what she said. His mother says I have wholly dedicated the silver unto the Lord from my hand for my son. And what is she going to do with that money? Look what it says to make a Graven image.
What does Exodus chapter 20 verses for say? You will have no graven images before me and what is this woman doing? She is making a Graven image and a molten image and she says now therefore I will restore it unto thee to me. That sounds a little dysfunctional. Does that sound dysfunctional to you?
Mom, I stole your Eleven Hundred shekels because you're cursed whoever stole that money. So I want to give it back Mom gets the money. She says praise. God praise you son. Here's some money back. Let's go make ourselves an image. Let's make ourselves an idol the mom replies. She says I've set this money apart to the Lord because I want to make you an idol.
I'm going to give you an idol. So his mother took 200 shekels. And she sent and paid for a Founder to make an idol and look what the first part of verse 5 says. Look what the Bible says. And the man Micah get this had a house of wood. What was like the first thing that God told Israel back when they're on Mount Sinai?
No other gods before me. And here we're at a point in time and the day and age when people are doing what. It's subjective, right? What's truth? It's good for me. Right? I'm going to have a house Idols. I'm going to do whatever I want and he actually has a house of gods and they made ephod and teraphim 's and they can consecrated get this one of his sons who became what?
Not only not only are they making on God's but they're making up their own leadership in their own worship. You see what's happening here Micah had already had a house full of idols. And what's going on with this home Micah's Michael at Micah's Idols were not an anomaly, but they seem like they were being the norm back then he had Idols already in the house.
That was the type of guy that Michael was. He was a worshipper and Idol worshiper and get this he was teaching his son to follow in those footsteps. What happens when we're left alone to ourselves? What happens when you do what's right for you? And I do what's right for me and everyone does right for their own selves what happens?
in every age. throughout the Bible get this. In every age there has been a specific code of worship. Man get this man does not get the Liberty to generate his own ideas of worship. Worship is designed objectively meaning truth. There's truth. It's not up for you to figure it out. God put it out there objectively and who designed?
God does so what happens when we are left alone to ourselves what happens? That's the question. What was destroyed In this passage of scripture right now? What seemed so dysfunctional that a guy would steal from his mom come back and she would praise the Lord and build them as an idol. What seems like everything is out of whack.
What's that away? Do you think stealing from your family's a big I as a big to-do. Do you think using the money that your mom says she's going to dedicate to God to go build altars or go build Idols is a big deal. What happens get this what happens when you are left to yourself? The first thing that we see in this passage, is this the home is destroyed.
Family is destroyed. If you guys got your bibles, if you could sum could someone take Deuteronomy. I'll just do it Deuteronomy chapter 18 verses 6. I want you to see the scripture What God Says. He says this. And if a levite come any of thy Gates out of Israel where he sojourned where he's like wondering where he's going?
And come with all desire in his mind into a place which the what Lord shall choose who chooses in this one. God does the story doesn't stop in Judges chapter 17 and chapter 18 it continues and there we see some hippie levite that was traveling around. Okay, that's what happens. He was out of the town of Bethlehem.
Which was strange because it wasn't a town that was set apart of the tribes of Levi in the Book of Joshua. But he was out of the town of Bethlehem. Something caused this levite to leave the area that God gave to his tribe. I wonder. well this leave I was looking for a specific place where he could live.
And as this levite was walking he came into the house and Mount Ephraim Micah's place and Micah comes out to this Levi and he asked him for his story. Where are you coming from? The levite Tells Micah his story and at the end of it Micah offers this levite probably one of the best deals that this young man has ever been offered.
Stay with me Micah says and I'll give you ten shekels a year. I'll give you clothes. I'll give you food. I'll give you a place to stay. So this levite decided that he was going to stay with mica and Micah's and be Micah's own personal father and a priest. That's exactly what this levite does. He was happy to be with Micah and Micah was extremely happy.
To have his own levite and this is why I look in Judges chapter 17 verses 13. This is what the scripture says. Then said Micah. Now I are now know I that the Lord will do me good. Why seeing I have a levite to my priest. He's got his lucky charm.
Micah get this was after what God could do for him. It was a consumer-based religion. It was a consumer-based mindset God. What are you going to do for me? I got one of yours. Now. You got to do me good. It was what can God do for me? There was the heart of the worshiper. There was the levite there was Micah.
The levite was only in it for personal gain later on in chapter 18 600 men from the tribe of Dan will be spent at will be sent out. Buy some spies and they will find this levite and I got a personal guy friend of mine. Would you read Judges chapter 18 verses 13 through 20. Could you read that for me Graham stand up there and read out loud, please stand up stand up, please.
They passed the engine to the Mount Ephraim. I came into the house of Micah then answer the five men that went to spy out the country of Laius and said unto their Brethren, you know that there is in these houses in ephod and the teraphim and a Graven image. The molten image now therefore consider what you have to do and they turned the other word and came to the house of the young men the levite even in the house of Micah and saluted him and the 600 men appointed with their weapons of war which are of the children of Dan stood by the entering of the gate and five men that went up to spy out.
The land went up and came into their took the Graven image and the ephod and the teraphim and the molten image and the priest stood in the entering of the gate with the 600 men. There are pointed with weapons of war. So what happens I must stop you earlier. What happens in the story? There's 600 men of this tribe of Dan they hear about this town.
They hear about this place where that has a house of God. They have a letter only vitamin. They have their own own worship. They have their own way of way of doing stuff. Let's go out there and check it out. So they get there and they what they end up taking where they take with them. You got it.
Yeah, go for it. What about ya go? I thought you said you did. They took it into my house and fetch the cart carved image the ephod and the teraphim in the molten image then said the prisoner they must stop right there. What did they take? They took the images. They took the Graven image. They took the molten image.
They stole they stole all the idols. And what is what is the levite do? What does he do? What are you doing with my with my owners idols? And what do they say on hand upon thy mouth and go with us. So what does that mean? Shut up watch your mouth. Okay, keep on reading. Is it better for thee to be priest unto the house of one man with his I'll be a priest into a tribe and family is.
Verse 20 priest heart was glad and he took the ephod and the teraphim and the Graven image and went in the midst of the people. What happens here? this levite. who God said in Deuteronomy chapter 18 verses 6, you can go surgeon you go out and places but you go where I show you which I will choose for you.
How did he make his decision to get to Micah's place? money. When the the 600 men come up there and they take they take the idols. They take all the garments. They take eight basically the whole worship system that Micah had and this I mean might makes right right and so they're walking out and they're walking out with her mic in this levite goes.
What are you doing for my stuff? Why you guys taking this? They said Hold on. Hold on. I want to give you a better we're gonna give you a better deal. Is it better for you to serve one house or you want to serve an entire tribe? Do you want to serve an entire tribe with us or you want to go back to that little small dinky Little Country Place and you just hang out with that family and notice notice notice what happens inside inside the the priest heart?
Look what it says verse number 20 and the priest heart was what glad. where where is scripture in all this? That's why I want to ask. How are you making these decisions? Mr. Priest? How are you? Trying to figure out what God is doing in your life. Oh, yeah, you do. What makes you glad? The levite get this was no better than Micah.
He was in it for popularity. He was in it for a salary. He was in it for a bigger audience. It had nothing to do anything about God. His religion was shallow. They had only themselves their wants and their desires to follow. There was no thought of God. There was no thought of his word. There was absolutely only what they felt no truth and what happens when we're left to ourselves to follow our own whims and our own wants and our own desires.
families destroyed houses destroyed. worship. Is destroy you guys get that? You see that in the story there was there was a place that God gave the Israelites and he says if you do go wandering out I will choose the place. How does how does the levite get there? It's all based on money. It's all based on his wants.
He's going after his own heart. Whatever makes him happy. Whatever makes him glad you guys see this. Do you guys see any correlation to do that to nowadays? How do you make your decisions? I want this I want that. I want to go after my heart man. We looked we looked at in the beginning. What's in our heart.
How are we shaping? How are we conceived? There needs to be true somewhere there needs to be guidance. We can't do it on our own. We're not inherently good out of our heart out of our heart comes these things. We need something. That's gonna change us. We need someone's going to direct us what happens when your left to yourself what happens when you get to make the decisions?
Homes are destroyed religions destroyed and it doesn't end there. Doesn't in there before we get there. I just want you to think about this some some questions. Where do you find truth? Where do you find truth? I don't know about you, but inside me, I just I got to know truth. I don't want your opinion.
I want to know truth. Why is it what you just said in your five minute message? Why is it so important? We study we give diligence? why is bot the word of God so. Is this book real? How do you make decisions in life? I watch television shows which I will not name. But there is this one. It's like a post-apocalyptic.
I think it was a movie or something like that. Anyways, they're trying to come up with a way to reduce Society. Like it's time for a law. That's like oh stink. You get the Bible get the Bible that's going to help you out. That'll make the society right and they try to go out there and they make it on their own you ever think about this before God gives Israel the land.
He gives them five books to say this is the way we're going to run it guys. You don't have to make those questions. You have to come up with those answers. Think about how hard it was for our founding fathers in the United States to come up with a with a good look rule system trying to figure out how we're going to run America Israel.
They already had it laid out for them everything and the Bible says that when the king reads it he says, oh it's perfect. It is wonderful. It is wonderful, you know about this book. It says that it can discern your thoughts and the intents of your heart sit even nose down inside what you're thinking and what's going on inside your heart.
That's how powerful this book is. Why is it because exactly what you said the second Timothy chapter 3, it's inspired its breathed by God. We need Truth. Where do you find truth? And this one they were just doing whatever they want.
The family and worship were not the only things destroyed and judges 18. We see Society unraveling. During this time. God should have been King. His word should have been law and everyone was to live by that.
If people would have forsaken their idols. And if the Elders of Israel would have been Consulting God's law and obeying it for God's glory. Israel would have been governed successfully instead judges says every man did write that which is in his own eyes. They did whatever they wanted. And the result was Society was filled with competition and confusion.
and the Book of Joshua God gives. Out Israel certain spot certain lands. Okay that part of the Bible reading you're like, okay. This is getting kind of boring. Okay we go up in this tribe and they get this certain area and they get that certain area. God gave out certain areas for people. Well, the danites weren't able to feed their enemies so they went out and they looked for an inheritance to live out to live in they sent out five men to spy out the land and that's exactly what they did.
On the way to spying out. They that's when they stopped by Dan's house or the Micah's house and they see the levite there's something about this levite. He didn't talk like a person from his around there. So they asked them a question and they asked him where he was going if where they were going to would be prosperous and the priest replied in Judges chapter 18 verses 6.
He says this go in peace before the Lord is your way wherein you go. Well these men come to a place called latish and they see how well off these people are and how careless and quiet and secure and there was no magistrate in the land. No one to put them to shame. They had no dealings with any of any man.
It was an ideal place in judges 18 after they do their scope in the Renaissance or whatever Rincon. I don't know. I'm not. In the reconnaissance. There we go. Thank you so much for Words. These spies returned to their brothers and they told them all that they have found. You know what they did.
when they find out about that town of Laius.
guess who gets the blame? Look in Judges chapter 18 verses 10. Look what it says. when you go up. You shall come into people secure onto a large land. For God have given it into your hands. Who are they blaming these danhype people are going to steal the land from these latest people. Who were they saying that gave them this land?
God gave it to you. Think about this in the day and age we live in how do people know what truth is. So many people are speaking on behalf of God, but yet they don't realize what God saying and all the lost people out there like wondering what's truth. And these men these men they go out there.
They say look at this. Lana secure place is exactly what we wanted. God gave it to us. There's no other place like this in the Earth. So they take 600 men they take the idols out of Michael's house. We already talked about that. They take the levite from Micah look at chapter 18. We already looked at that Micah then goes on and tries to catch up and he finds the group of stolen taking back what they've stolen from them and the people says keep your voice down or do you want some angry fellows who come after you so the danites they take all of Micah stuff.
They go up to Laius and look what they do. They destroy the people they destroy the people and Burn the City. Judges 18 verse 27. This is what the scripture says. And they took the things which Micah had made and the priests which he had and they came unto Laius onto a people that were quiet and secure.
And they smote them. They killed him. With the edge of the sword and they burnt the city with fire. What a total disregard for life. What total disregard for Law and Order these people took whatever they wanted they worshipped. However, they wanted and guess what's going on during their day and age.
Take your Bible and read at the end of Judges chapter 18 verses 31. This is what the scripture says. And they set up. Talking about this tribe of Dan the setup them that they said them up Micah's Graven image, which he had made underlying this last portion of the verses if you like underlying your Bible all the time that the house of God was where.
in Shiloh that one place. the whole time they had truth. The whole time it was there. There was one place where they could worship God there's one place where the law was speaking about. There was one place they could take their ties and offering back. But what do they want to do? They want to do whatever they wanted, right everyone was doing right in their own eyes.
Right, isn't that what was going on? How many times how many times I look out and I see the world and I look man, how can you keep on living on that path? Doing what's right in your own eyes. Don't you see the families that are destroyed don't you see the worship the destroyed you realize false worship never fulfills never satisfies.
That's why it's so refreshing to come the vision. I feel like when I came here man, it was so refreshing because it was like real, you know I'm saying, This is like real like when they think about what they sing. It's not just songs and make sure it's docked really correct. They talk about they make sure what they preach is from the scriptures.
It's not just some pop psychology. It's what God says. It's so refreshing. But during that time the religion was fake. Religion was destroyed. The house was destroyed Society was destroyed. You got to know later on in the Book of Judges. It's not even safe for them to walk down the road.
What happens when we're left to ourselves?
Total disregard for society total disregard for worship total disregard for the family and it's destroyed. So to you men. I want to ask you guys some questions. Because Pastor said hey talk to about their family talk to him about. Victory over sin. Give me a whole bunch of lists of stuff. I want to ask you a serious question.
How do you view scripture?
How do you view this book? When it tells you to forgive. When it tells you to love. When it tells you to speak Grace and Truth. How do you view this book? when he tells you to repent. when he tells you to the humble yourselves. How do you view this book? You know what? I think I'm going to end with this.
I'm not big. I tell the students this all the time. I'm not big on do's and don'ts. I don't like giving out rules. Seems cumbersome. I can't keep him up most of the time. If I could change anything, I wouldn't change the rules. I would change your mindset. That makes sense. And I would say how do you view this thing?
We were Wicked we work and how does he say it conceived? conceived and what iniquity. we need to changing don't we? Where do we get the changing from and the Word was made flesh and dwelt Among Us. We need to changing we need this book. It's the only way we get saved. It's the only way that we can be transformed.
So how do you view this? What blows my mind is the whole time that this is going on. The house is being destroyed worships being destroyed and Society there was a place for truth. But yet they thought that they could do what they what they wanted and their own way and they thought that they could get along.
And now we're looking about looking at him over 3,000 years later and we're saying don't be like these people. God gave us something to save us. How do you view it? And for you there, that's not saved. I would be where. This is not just some fat preacher talking. It is but I mean, it's not just my words.
It's a serious as a heart attack. God's judgement is Swift. You don't know when it comes and if there's anyone out there that has never humbled himself before God.
