II Samuel 9:8 And he bowed himself, and said, What is thy servant, that thou shouldest look upon such a dead dog as I am?
David has decided to show kindness to his memory and promise to Jonathan. He sends and finds out about Mephibosheth, who is basically in hiding. He is lame.
Mephibosheth knows that he should be dead if David decides to do what all kings did at the time.
When he is brought in to David, he honors David. He tells David that he is there to serve him.
When David explains that he wants to be a blessing to him, Mephibosheth is shocked. He says that he doesn’t deserve such consideration.
When I read a passage like this, I am always shocked to see such humility. I am afraid that I am so prideful that I rarely react that way. I want and expect to be honored. I hate it that I find myself to be so proud, but if I am honest, I am too much like that.
Do you find yourself believing you do not deserve the honor? Do you think that you are simply a servant? I want to learn to live, not thinking about myself and what I want so much.
