Taxing instead defeating

Joshua 17:13 Yet it came to pass, when the children of Israel were waxen strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute; but did not utterly drive them out.

God told the Israelites to destroy and utterly drive out the pagan nations that had inhabited the land. The point was that those nations worshipped false gods. God’s people might be convinced to worship idols if they were surrounded by sinful worship. These nations represent sin for us.

They were to get rid of the sin. They were to separate from the sin. Instead, they decided to hold on to the false nations and tax them. They wouldn’t totally destroy them; they would profit from them. The problem is that these nations then so contaminated and polluted the land of Israel that they will suffer the consequences of their sins for generations.

Do not make a partnership with sin. Do not live tolerantly with sin. Realize that sin is your mortal enemy and will destroy you. Get rid of it. Turn from sin and serve the Lord. Obey Him. Worship Him. Do not look at or listen to another.
