How to treat your enemies

Matthew 5:44 But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;

Jesus taught his disciples to do something radically different than anyone else in their culture. He taught them to do something that goes against everything in our human nature. Jesus taught them to love their enemies instead of hating them. He told them to do what they least expected. They were to be kind to them. They were to pray for them.

When someone hurts us, we want to strike back. We want to be angry. We want to proclaim our hurt from the rooftops. Jesus told them to do the opposite.

As I read this, I thought of some that have hurt me. I do not want to love my enemies. I do not want to pray God’s blessings on them. But living out who I am in Christ is not about me and what I want but rather Him and what He wants. It is not about my feelings but my obedience. It is not about what I can do but what He tells me to do.

Wow, now I have a long list of attitudes that need changing in me. I need to treat people differently. If I do this for my enemies what about the ones, I do not even know. What about my friends, how should I treat them.
