Matthew 1:19 Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not willing to make her a publick example, was minded to put her away privily.
Joseph was a just man. The verse says “being a just man!” You don’t make yourself a just man. This word just means righteous. He was an honest and good man but more than that he was a saved man. He was a follower of the Lord. He worshipped the God of heaven.
Now being who he was made him act kindly towards Mary. He didn’t want to embarrass her. He was going to divorce her privately. He was not going to call for stoning or any publicity. He merely wanted to do right and still be kind.
As I read about Joseph, I want to ask you if you have been made righteous. You can’t do this for yourself. Only Jesus can make us righteous or just.
If you are righteous, does it motivate you to treat others with love and kindness? If you are vengeful, bitter, angry, and hateful, then you have a wisdom that doesn’t come from God. That sort of wisdom is earthy, sensual, and devilish.
Let’s live out who we are. He saved us. He made us different. He lives in and through us.
