Isaiah 28:7 But they also have erred through wine, and through strong drink are out of the way; The priest and the prophet have erred through strong drink, They are swallowed up of wine, they are out of the way through strong drink; They err in vision, they stumble in judgment.
The men of God and the leaders of Israel were making mistakes in judgment. They made mistakes because of the effect their wine was having on them. They got off track because of their strong drinks. Even their men of God, priests, and prophets began to take the strong alcohol. As they did, they made mistakes. The wine took over their lives. They went where they had never intended to go. They lost the right perspective on things. They didn’t make the right decisions.
I know it is fashionable today to speak of drinking alcohol even among God’s people. It has become the new and accepted thing to do. You are a cool preacher if you can get a beer with your people. Others mock those of us that still fear the effects of alcohol. We are old and stuffy. We are legalists.
But then I read the Bible and see verses like this one. I see what alcohol has done to others. I think I am showing wisdom and restraint when I do not run to the same excesses as some others. Why would you do something that is so closely associated with error and misjudgment? I want to lead God’s people correctly. I need wisdom. I need to be able to think clearly and make good decisions. I need to lead God’s people to make good choices. What do you think?
