Nehemiah 9:5 Then the Levites, Jeshua, and Kadmiel, Bani, Hashabniah, Sherebiah, Hodijah, Shebaniah, and Pethahiah, said, Stand up and bless the Lord your God for ever and ever: and blessed be thy glorious name, which is exalted above all blessing and praise.
This chapter is about God’s people worshipping God. The Levites are leading them. They challenge the people to stand up and bless the Lord. That means to praise Him. That means to tell Him how great He is. They want to shout His praises. They consider Him to be glorious. They want to exalt Him by showing Him precisely who He is to them.
How do you feel about God? Do you love Him? Do you want to express your love for Him publicly? I think that many of us would say we love God. We believe in him. We just do not want to be too expressive of the fact. We want to maintain our dignity. We don’t want anyone thinking we are a fanatic. This is the opposite of the reaction of God’s people in this chapter. They loved God. They wanted to express that love.
We say we are private people. We say it is not our personality to speak publicly of our love. That is true about God but not necessarily politics. We don’t want to get overly excited about God, but we do about sports, or money, or things.
Isn’t it time to stand up and bless Him. We are even embarrassed to be excited about God in His own house often. Time to do an attitude check. Time to consider if we are right to be like we are.
