Nehemiah 9:16 But they and our fathers dealt proudly, and hardened their necks, and hearkened not to thy commandments
In this verse, God’s people recognize that their parents did wrong. Often we want to excuse the sins of our parents. We want to accept what they did, and that becomes our excuse for doing the same. Their parents had been proud and resisted the will of God. Their parents had chosen not to listen to or obey the Word of God.
Now they were living much like their parents. To get right with God was to admit that their parents had been wrong. Their love for their parents would make it hard to change and stand against what they had been raised with and doing.
Their parents had not admitted their need of God. Their parents refused to humble themselves. Their parents didn’t spend time in the Word of God trying to find what God wanted in their lives.
Now that can become a good excuse for them. They were living like their parents raised them. They were honoring their parents.
There comes a day when you must choose God and His will over your parents and their will. Recognize when your parents did wrong. Be honest. Quit using your parents and their lifestyle as an excuse for yours.
