Ezra 9:13 And after all that is come upon us for our evil deeds, and for our great trespass, seeing that thou our God hast punished us less than our iniquities deserve, and hast given us such deliverance as this;
God’s people realized that God had punished them as a nation much less than they deserved. They had suffered. They went through very rough times but when they considered their evil deeds and great trespasses they knew God had shown mercy. God came through for the country and delivered them just because of His mercy.
When things go wrong, we typically think that God has been harsh with us. We think of what we want. We think of how we feel about ourselves and not about right and wrong. We consider our situation and not our sin. We believe we deserve better.
These people were wise enough to realize that God was good and kind. God was treating them better than they deserved. Be honest. How often do you evaluate your sin and failure and turn to God with gratefulness that He is not punishing you as you deserve?
