I Samuel 30:23 Then said David, Ye shall not do so, my brethren, with that which the LORD hath given us, who hath preserved us, and delivered the company that came against us into our hand.
David’s men feel like they deserve extra bounty, money, from their fight against those that had stolen from them. Some of the men, one third, had stayed home. They were too tired to continue in the fight. The others had now won and were returning home. They wanted to extra rewards.
David sees things differently. He doesn’t see what they accomplished but rather that God has done it. It was God that preserved them. It was God that gave them the victory. Instead of thinking of his accomplishments he saw God.
How often do you think that you are the successful one? How often do you feel like you deserve extra for all of your effort? It is easy to fall into the trap of thinking that we are self-made people. It is easy to feel that we accomplished what God is doing in our lives.
