Judges 8:27 And Gideon made an ephod thereof, and put it in his city, even in Ophrah: and all Israel went thither a whoring after it: which thing became a snare unto Gideon, and to his house.
Gideon seemed to want to serve God. It doesn’t appear that he had any desire to cause God’s people to veer off from serving God. He simply wanted something to remember the great victory. It didn’t take long for people to turn an innocent remembrance into an idol. That idol becomes a snare, a trap, that destroys Gideon’s family.
I want to be careful not to let God’s gifts to me become idols. I do not want to love the gift more than the giver. I wish not to cause God’s people to get off track. I want to be very careful to keep God in front of my family and me.
