Proverbs 19:6 Many will intreat the favour of the prince: And every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.
Everybody wants help from the great prince. The prince has access to power. The prince has money. The prince is famous. He can change your life. So people seek out the prince. They do so not from love but from what they can get.
The man who gives gifts and benefits gets lots of friends. Again it is the same idea. They have friends because people seek them out for what they can get.
First, I should be careful that I do not use people like this. I should love them regardless of what I can get from them. Second, I should understand human nature expressed in this proverb.
As a missionary, this would be a very important proverb to consider and learn. There is a saying, Do they love the pig or the bacon they can get?
