Just a few

February 1, 2018 By Austin Gardner Leave a Comment

1 Samuel 14:6 And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armour, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that the LORD will work for us: for there is no restraint to the LORD to save by many or by few.

Jonathan and his armor-bearer are about to win a grand victory. The Philistines are all around. Israel has very few weapons 1Samuel 13:22. There isn’t any humanly possible way for Jonathan or Israel to win a victory. However, Jonathan has learned a genuinely great lesson. God can do a work if He wants! Nothing can stop Him! He can work with many or a few.

Jonathan and his armor-bearer proceed across to do battle, and the Lord wins a great victory that day 1Samuel 14:23. Notice even though Jonathan had gone to battle it was the Lord that won the battle.

That is an excellent lesson for all of us. God is the one who fights the fight. The battle is the Lord’s. God can do a great work with many or few. All He is looking for us for us to be faithful and to listen to him.

You may be wondering what you can do to make a difference in the world today. You look around, and it appears that everything is getting worse and that sin is winning on every side. You feel helpless against the evil of our day, but you must realize that you can be used of God.

Jonathan said, “it may be that the Lord will work for us!” That is all you can say. I can’t promise you that God will work but this much I can say, He might. So it is time for you to stand up and be counted. You do what is right. Stand up to sin. Stand up for Jesus. Open your mouth and witness to your friends and neighbors. You cannot save them, but you never know just what God will use or when He will work. Yours is not to reason why or when but to do what you should.

Do not look around and think that we are in trouble or that God is not working. Instead, realize that God has a unique job for you to do. Even if you are alone. Remember, there is no restraint. Nothing can stop God and what He wants to do. Move forward anticipating that God will work.

The offering that you give makes a difference. The prayers that you pray make a difference. The work that you do makes a difference. You know that because you know that God will take what you do and multiply it. You know that God is merely looking for someone to step forward and act.

I love how God used Jonathan. I love how he and his armor-bearer all alone are used to chase the enemy soldiers. I love even more how God uses little people like you and me. He takes our little lives and what little we can offer and makes an eternal difference.

Do not let the small numbers worry you. We are not dealing with what we can do but instead with what He can do. We can trust Him to do big things.
