Deuteronomy 1:22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said, We will send men before us, and they shall search us out the land, and bring us word again by what way we must go up, and into what cities we shall come.
God had promised them the land. He had told them it was good and He would give them the victory. They wanted to know more about the area before they entered. They went to Moses and asked to send spies into the land first.
Their excuses weren’t that bad. They would go in and consider the plan of attack. They would look at where they should go first and how they should take the land. God had been directing them. God had shown them the way and made provision for the entire journey. Now they needed to check out what “they” were to do.
There is the problem. Israel stopped trusting Jesus and started considering how they would accomplish His will and plan for their lives. You know that they will go into the land and find out that they can’t take the land. They will see that it is a land of blessing, but they will realize that they are unable. They will lose focus. They will wander in a near meaningless life for the forty years.
Wouldn’t it be better to trust the Lord? Sufficient to the day is the evil thereof. We can just do what we know to do today and leave tomorrow in His hands. We will accomplish His purposes and not willfully strike out on our own. If we do step out on our own, we invite disaster.
