Genesis 21:11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham’s sight because of his son.
When Abraham doubted God’s promise, He had sexual relations with his handmaid to help God fulfill His promise. She got pregnant, but it was never God’s will. God had promised to give Abraham a son through his wife, Sarah.
Now years have gone by, and God fulfills His promise to Abraham with the birth of Isaac. God, however, didn’t want things to be confused, so Abraham was to send Ishmael, the illegitimate son, away.
This grieved Abraham. He loved his son. He had done wrong and realized it but still loved Ishmael.
So often when we do wrong, we do not realize how much it will make us sorrow and hurt nor how much it will hurt others. Sin hurts. Sin hurts lots of people. Sin can hurt for a long time.
Sin has to be put away! We are forgiven, but the consequences are still there. We need to be careful to stand against our own sin because we know how it hurts!
