Exodus 34:15 Lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they go a whoring after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and one call thee, and thou eat of his sacrifice; 16 And thou take of their daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go a whoring after their gods, and make thy sons go a whoring after their gods.
God gave His people the promised land. He even overthrew the inhabitants so that they could have the land. They conquered and took the land but by miracle. God is emphasizing here that they were not to enter into agreements with the people of the land.
God didn’t want them to go after false gods. All gods but God are false gods. He didn’t want them to learn about the worship of false gods. He didn’t want them to partake in their religious festivities.
God also didn’t want them to marry people that worshipped another god. He knew that if they entered into a relationship with someone that worshipped a false god they would slowly change their attitude towards the false god.
We live in a world full of falsehood. There are false gods every where. It is easy to fall into the trap of being tolerant of things that are not true. We want everyone to like us and we want to like everyone. That simply will not work.
You, as a believer, need to decide to follow Jesus. You need to realize that means you turn your back on many other things. When you stand for truth you have to stand against error. Stay away from other gods.
