Exodus 23:8 And thou shalt take no gift: for the gift blindeth the wise, and perverteth the words of the righteous.
Moses taught the men that worked with him to be careful about accepting gifts. If someone gives to you it will not be long before they have too much influence. They get what they want because they have the money. The Peruvians used to joke about the Golden Rule. It meant that the one who has the gold makes the rules. It is so true, so many times! It might be intentional and it might not be. The problem is that we all love and want money. We are looking for it any way we can get it that seems half way right. When someone gives to us it affects us. We like getting and then we feel like we have to give back.
There are a couple of lessons. One is that I should do right no matter what I feel like I owe a person. That is the big problem with nepotism, hiring your relatives. They are loved, part of the family, and we will refuse to see their problems and weaknesses. So lesson one is for us not to allow gifts to make us have favorites.
Lesson number two is for us not to use money to gain that advantage for ourselves. It is so easy. I am his friend and expect him to be my friend. I do for him and expect him to do for me. It is like we buy loyalty. We buy friends. That is wrong and never pleases God.
