Successful enough to leave God

II Chronicles 12:1 And it came to pass, when Rehoboam had established the kingdom, and had strengthened himself, he forsook the law of the LORD, and all Israel with him.

What a horrific thing to have happen in the life of one of God’s men. God had warned the nation of Israel of this tendency since they left the slavery of Egypt. He said that when they got successful they would forget Him and walk away from Him.

That is what happens in Rehoboam’s life. He gets established and strong. He feels good about where he is in life and then decides to walk away from the Word of God and God Himself. Not only did Rehoboam walk away and forget God but He led everyone else to do the same.

There are some strong reminders here for me. I need to be careful not to get so successful, so comfortable that I do not need God. I do not want to get to a place in my life that I don’t want to be in the Book and learning more about God and obeying Him.

I don’t want to lead others away from the Lord because of this fake successfulness that I might enjoy. It is easy to feel successful but if we walk away from God then we are no longer successful.
