II Samuel 10:2 Then said David, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, as his father shewed kindness unto me. And David sent to comfort him by the hand of his servants for his father. And David’s servants came into the land of the children of Ammon.
Apparently, David wanted to genuinely show kindness to Hanun. The ones who advised Hanun didn’t like David or his kingdom. Their preconceived opinions caused them to hate David and think the wrong thing as David sent his men. They didn’t trust David or his intentions. That caused them to publicly humiliate David’s men. This brings about war.
Several lessons appear to me. I should be careful as I evaluate the intentions of what others do so as not to cause a much worse problem than the one that was intended. I should expect that people will misunderstand me and my genuine desires. Their misunderstanding could be caused by their own preconceptions more than my intentions.
People even misunderstand the Lord, the gospel, and the church because when they hear that the Bible calls them a sinner they get angry. They are angry because they are being judged but do not realize that this judgment just gets them where they can hear and accept the gospel.
The message is often interpreted by the heart of the listener more than the message and its actual value.
