II Samuel 2:26 Then Abner called to Joab, and said, Shall the sword devour for ever? knowest thou not that it will be bitterness in the latter end? how long shall it be then, ere thou bid the people return from following their brethren?
Joab is leading David’s troops. Abner was leading the troops of Ishbosheth the son of Saul. They were fighting. Some didn’t want David to be king. Now several hundred of Abner’s men have died. One of Joab’s brothers has been killed by Abner. The question is asked, how long are we going to keep fighting. This fighting only leads to more bitterness. Isn’t it time to call it off.
I think this is a good lesson for us. Take the stand you need to take. Get the job done but get it over with and move on. Continually fighting and harboring resentment in our hearts only causes more and more bitterness. Time to stop fighting!
