I Samuel 6:6 Wherefore then do ye harden your hearts, as the Egyptians and Pharaoh hardened their hearts? when he had wrought wonderfully among them, did they not let the people go, and they departed?
The priests and diviners, their religious leaders, have come together. They have a plan to try and get peace with the God of Heaven. They will send back the ark with offerings.
Several things jump off the page at me. They knew all about what had happened way back in the book of Exodus. They knew that the true God had destroyed the gods of Egypt. They knew that the only way Egypt got peace was by letting the people of God go.
The funny thing is that the spiritual leaders challenge their people to not let their hearts be hardened. If their hearts are hardened then they are going to suffer like Egypt suffered.
These heathen priests knew that the Egyptians had been responsible and foolish. They warn their people against it.
The other thing that really should get our attention is that these people knew about the God of Israel. They knew of His power. They knew He wasn’t like their little gods.
They should have repented. They should have converted from their little, false gods to the true God of Heaven. Instead they chose to stay with their false god.
This should help you understand something about how and why God would destroy entire peoples. They knew and rejected the truth. They wanted nothing to do with the truth.
