Joshua 13:33 But unto the tribe of Levi Moses gave not any inheritance: the LORD God of Israel was their inheritance, as he said unto them.
In this chapter God has been dividing up the land. All the tribes get wonderful land given to them. They will have a place to live, to raise their family. They will have land that will produce great crops and literally make them rich if they work.
No inheritance is given to the Levites. God is their inheritance. That sounds really good on one side.
God is our inheritance, they had to think, but then He is everyone else’s God also. They had to understand that they would live off of the obedience of God’s people. As long as God’s people gave the offerings that they should then the Levites would have a very good life.
But they didn’t live off of their own work, per say! They live off of their work as long as the people are obedient. We know from Nehemiah that they weren’t always obedient.
On the other hand the people had to think that it sure was tough to sit there and look at all the other tribes getting great chunks of land from God while they got nothing.
They should not have been jealous. They should not have wanted what God gave to others but I still think that they might have felt a little war in their heart watching that.
Don’t we all fight these little battles sometimes? Don’t they seem like bigger battles when it is us in the fight?
God will provide. Let’s trust Him and accept whatever He gives us!
