Genesis 27:13 And his mother said unto him, Upon me be thy curse, my son: only obey my voice, and go fetch me them.
Isaac is about to die. He calls Esau, his oldest son, to go and get him some venison and then be blessed. This is the big day in a man’s life. The day he will be named that special heir to the leadership of the family.
Rebekah and Isaac have chosen different children to love and have as favorites. Rebekah has chosen Jacob. She is teaching him to be a deceptive manipulator.
She now has Jacob get a kid of the goats. She will prepare it just like Isaac likes. She wants Jacob to get the blessing instead of Esau. She hoped to manipulate her husband into doing what she wants.
This will cause the loss of both children. Esau will be bitter and do things just to hurt them. Jacob will have to be sent away from home and gone for 20 years.
The Bible doesn’t say much about how this affected Jacob and Rebekah’s relationship. It must have made for a tense atmosphere.
Wouldn’t it be better to work at being one, serving each other, loving each other? Wouldn’t it be better for all involved if each learned to play their own biblical roles?
