I Samuel 8:3 And his sons walked not in his ways, but turned aside after lucre, and took bribes, and perverted judgment.
Eli’s sons were not saved. They were not men of God. They didn’t follow God. Now the next leader of Israel is Samuel and he is having the same problem. His sons are following in his footsteps. They are after money. They are looking at how to have things more than the will of God.
It gets so bad that the people of Israel don’t want another man of God as their leader. They prefer a king. They want to be like other nations because they have seen the failures in the families of God’s men.
What a terrible indictment. How this should scare all of us. We want our families to follow Jesus. We want our families to live for God. We want to leave a godly heritage.
I know that I have failed in so many ways as a pastor, a man of God, a husband, and a dad but I want better for my children. I want them to learn from my mistakes.
That family altar might be more important than we ever thought. Getting the Word of God into them should be one of our highest agendas.
Let’s walk right and pray our children will follow in our footsteps.
