Isaiah 30 1 Woe to the rebellious children, saith the Lord, That take counsel, but not of me; And that cover with a covering, but not of my spirit, That they may add sin to sin: 2 That walk to go down into Egypt, And have not asked at my mouth; To strengthen themselves in the strength of Pharaoh, And to trust in the shadow of Egypt! 3 Therefore shall the strength of Pharaoh be your shame, And the trust in the shadow of Egypt your confusion.
There is a warning here because God’s people were looking for wisdom and help in the wrong places. They needed counsel, but they went to someone else instead of the Lord. They covered with a covering but not God’s Spirit. They relied upon Egypt and did not ask God for help.
This was a mistake because trusting in Egypt was like trusting in a shadow. They were going to be embarrassed and confused by this decision.
How often we make the same mistake. When we need help, when we need direction, when we need protection, we trust to other things and other people beside God.
