Following your own spirit

April 7, 2014 By Austin Gardner Leave a Comment

Ezekiel 13:3 Thus saith the Lord GOD; Woe unto the foolish prophets, that follow their own spirit, and have seen nothing!

God was angry with the foolish prophets because they were following their own spirits. They said they had seen something when they had not.

I am afraid that this is true of much preaching today. I am also afraid that it is how too many find the will of God.

We preach what is not in the Scriptures because we feel it. We feel it because of our culture, the way we were raised, what we have been taught is right from wrong. We preach it because it threatens what we see as right even if we haven’t checked out the Bible.

We get God’s will the same way! We see what want to do and get a vision. God tells us. Often what people want to do isn’t even Biblical. Everyone else can see it but them.

I do not want to follow my spirit. I want to follow Jesus and what He Has for me. I will do that by finding it in the Word of God to make sure He said it.

Just in case you might misinterpret this, I am not saying that you need a verse to do something. Too many find a verse that doesn’t contextually or in any other way have to do with what they are saying God is leading them to do. They abuse the verse to be able to see a vision.

Quit following your spirit!
