Judges 7:2 And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people that are with thee are too many for me to give the Midianites into their hands, lest Israel vaunt themselves against me, saying, Mine own hand hath saved me. 3 Now therefore go to, proclaim in the ears of the people, saying, Whosoever is fearful and afraid, let him return and depart early from mount Gilead. And there returned of the people twenty and two thousand; and there remained ten thousand. 4 And the LORD said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.
God wants man to know that it is His power that does the work. our God is a miracle working God. He wants man to realize his great need of Him. This encourages our hearts to know that what God wants is our obedience and faith. There are and will be great battles on the field where God calls you. Remember that the victory is the Lord’s. The battle doesn’t go to the many or the mighty. It goes to those who trust in Him and are willing to do battle His way.
Fear is contagious. Numbers do not impress. It is better to have fewer but faithful and fearless than many with fear. The faithless and fearful will destroy the ministry. Do not try to talk them into service. This is a discipleship and leader training principle. It must be in their heart. You have to constantly beg them then they are not leadership material.
There must be barriers to leadership training. First the cowards went home and then the careless. Those who can be trained for leadership will be comparatively few. Maybe all could go on but not all will. Some will be afraid. Others will want to do battle their way. Others will be careless but some will keep coming back for more. These you can train.
