Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.
Here you have Jesus giving us His example of how to treat the Scriptures.
First, He expounded them. That means He interpreted, translated, explained clearly and exactly. That is what we should be doing. We need our people to learn and see the truths from a different age and a different culture. The truths need to be made applicable. They need to be able to take home with them what God wants them to learn and put into practice.
Second, He showed them that the Scriptures were talking about Him. We should be careful to look for Jesus where ever we study. The law and the prophets all spoke of Jesus. He is the message of the Bible. Knowing the Bible is not to know facts but to know a person and He is Jesus.
You may not preach verse by verse through the Bible but you better find a passage and get all you can from that passage. Do not try and read into the passage what you want it to say. Do not try to see your culture in the verse. Find out what God is saying and say that.
