Matthew 23:4 For they bind heavy burdens and grievous to be borne, and lay them on men’s shoulders; but they themselves will not move them with one of their fingers.
In Jesus day religious people wanted to tell others what to do and then not do it themselves. They laid big burdens on others when they had no intention of doing what they told others to do. Actually it sounds a lot like what goes on today in many churches.
We choose the sins we handle well to feel good about ourselves and then look for the ones where others fail to cause them to suffer. We focus so much on the outside or externals that we are frustrated and then seek to frustrate everyone else also.
