Deuteronomy 9:4-5 Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee. Not for thy righteousness, or for the uprightness of thine heart, dost thou go to possess their land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD thy God doth drive them out from before thee, and that he may perform the word which the LORD sware unto thy fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
These are shocking words to Israel. They might have some relevance for us!
He knew that as they were blessed and God used them that they would begin to think things in their hearts that He didn’t want them to think so He takes the time here to write that down.
He knows that they would want to think that God had blessed them because they were good. God has used me and blessed me and given me this land because of how holy I am and how holy I live.
He tells them that is not the case. He really used Israel and blessed them because of the wickedness of the nations. Not because you are good but because they are bad. That has to hurt. I want God’s blessings to be dependent on me and how good I am. Just not what He says here.
He gives a second reason here to tell why He is doing so much for them. It was because of His Word, His promise given earlier to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
That hurts. God is using them, doing great things in their lives yet it has not to do with them but with other things.
There isn’t much room for pride in the story. Not much room to say look what God has done with me because I am so good.
