Genesis 50:17 So shall ye say unto Joseph, Forgive, I pray thee now, the trespass of thy brethren, and their sin; for they did unto thee evil: and now, we pray thee, forgive the trespass of the servants of the God of thy father. And Joseph wept when they spake unto him
Joseph’s brothers come to him and ask him to forgive them once again. They have been forgiven already. This time they come in the name of their dad. They say, our dad told us to come ask you to forgive us.
I read this thinking of why was Joseph sad. I am not sure that I have the answer but could it be that he is sad because they do not believe what he has said. He has tried to show them his character. He has loved and provided for them. He had adequate opportunity to avenge himself on his brothers before but he didn’t. He forgave them, loved them, and met their needs.
Nowhere they are again asking him to forgive them when they are forgiven. This caused me to think of how the Father must feel when I go to Him asking Him time and again to forgive me and not be angry for my sin after He has already forgiven me.
I say please in Jesus name forgive me. I even tell Him how good I have been trying to be. I often doubt His love.
I know that there is no direct correlation but I wonder if He is ever sad because I will not simply believe what He has already told me. I am forgiven. The price of my sins has already been paid. Jesus paid it all for me!
