Genesis 25:34 Then Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentiles; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way: thus Esau despised his birthright.
Esau sells his birthright in this passage because he is hungry. He may even think that it is not for real. Maybe he thinks Jacob nor his dad would hold him to the promise but he knows for sure that he is hungry and things like birthrights aren’t important at this moment.
He can worry about his birthright later. Right now he has to eat. But with this one foolish move he loses his birthright. He will be sorry for this the rest of his life. I am sure that he never thought it was that important at that moment. Even a joke about something this important was out of place.
Do you think through what is really important in your life? Are there things that you are leaving to one side because of a temporary desire or pleasure that you will one day regret? I know that I have. I know that my job was often more important than spending time with my children. I know that I have been so consumed in what I was doing that I failed to enjoy the life that God was giving me.
I know that I sometimes see things as far more important than they are and lose the importance of the really important things.
First is your relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Second is your relationship with your spouse. Next is your relationship with your children. Then your parents and family come next. Then your service to the Lord Jesus in church and your life and finally comes your job.
I haven’t seen it like that for much of my life but as I get older I realize that I have placed temporary things as more important than important lasting things. Maybe you can take this as a warning to evaluate what you are doing and not make the mistakes that I have made!
