Don’t count the men

2Samuel 24:3 And Joab said unto the king, Now the LORD thy God add unto the people, how many soever they be, an hundredfold, and that the eyes of my lord the king may see it: but why doth my lord the king delight in this thing?

David decides that he wants to know how many people live in his country. He wants to know how much he has to do battle with.

Joab warns him not to count. It has been a rule in Israel that they not count how many that they had and that God would always add what they needed. 1Chronicles 27:23 They were to never trust the arm of flesh. They were never to trust what they could do.

It wasn’t about them but about Him. He would do the work. Now David decides that he will count. God gets angry and punishes David and all of Israel.

The lesson for us is to know that God will do the work. We do not trust our own ability or resources. We trust Him.
