1Samuel 23:17 And he said unto him, Fear not: for the hand of Saul my father shall not find thee; and thou shalt be king over Israel, and I shall be next unto thee; and that also Saul my father knoweth.
Jonathan is the prince. He deserves to be king next. His father, Saul, simply seeks to protect Jonathan’s rightful place.
Jonathan realizes that God has a greater plan. God will place David on the throne. Jonathan willingly says that he will step aside, allow David to be king, and he will be in second position.
What humility is this! We fight to keep our position. He willingly surrenders his.
I think of missionaries working in teams all fighting to be first and get the recognition and no one willing to give up their rightful position.
I think of wives fighting to be the head of the home because of their rights and not willing to recognize that God has a different plan.
I see men and women in the church fighting for preeminence like Diotrophes and so very few willing to give up their “humanly” rightful position.
Can we learn anything from Jonathan today?
