Mark 7:9 And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.
Jesus said that the Pharisees were not obeying God but rather more concerned about keeping to their traditions. He explained how they even used their traditions to be able to do what they wanted to do. They would violate Scripture and even traditions with another tradition to get what they wanted.
Sounds like modern day Christians to me. We say we do not hold to traditions. We say that we are Bible Christians and the Bible is our only rule of faith and practice yet so many times we have traditions that can’t be found in the Bible.
We condemn others for following traditions but we follow the ones we choose.
There is nothing wrong with traditions but we should be sure that they are Biblical. Especially before we try to hold someone else to them.
I certainly do not want to be guilty of doing what I want instead of what God wants in the name of tradition though I am know that I have in the past and probably still do now.
It is something that dies hard and slow but it must die. Scripture is more important than tradition. I know you believe that as well as I do. Now let’s try to live it!
