Proverbs 26:20-26 Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth. As coals are to burning coals, and wood to fire; so is a contentious man to kindle strife. The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly. Burning lips and a wicked heart are like a potsherd covered with silver dross. He that hateth dissembleth with his lips, and layeth up deceit within him; When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart. Whose hatred is covered by deceit, his wickedness shall be shewed before the whole congregation.
What a powerful passage of Scripture! I have been guilty more times than I would like to admit. For our consideration look at the talebearer.
When he is removed from the equation then strife, fussing, and fighting will stop. The talebearer uses words to wound. These wounds are severe. They go down into the center of a person. This talebearer is a gospel, a whisperer. He says don’t tell anybody that I told you BUT!
Now consider the person who is full of hate. Apparently both of these people have this problem. The hater wants to hide his hate. He will try and word his accusation under a glaze. He will sugar coat it but the truth is that he wants to get out information to hurt others.
His heart is full of deception. You cannot believe him even when he says something nice because he has a heart full of hate that will come out.
There are contentious people. They simply want to stir up strife. They want to cause trouble for others.
We would be wise to remove all of this we can from our own lives. We would also be wise to not associate with people like this because we know what it leads to. Sooner or later the truth will come out!
Remember that gossip is delicious. We all want to hear it. The temptation is strong. God help us to live differently and to avoid the sins mentioned in this passage.
