Proverbs 9:8-9 Reprove not a scorner, lest he hate thee: rebuke a wise man, and he will love thee. Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be yet wiser: teach a just man, and he will increase in learning.
The scorner here is a mocker. He shows contempt for everyone and everything. Everything is a joke to him. If you try to teach him something he will simply hate you. He already knows. If you scold him you will just make him mad. He doesn’t need your help. After all, look at all he has done, all he knows, listen to him and his stories.
Then there is a wise man. He will love it if you teach him even if it means calling his hand and reproving him. If you teach a wise man or a just man it is well worth your time. They will increase in learning. They will get wiser. They will love you.
For the last 20 years at least God has allowed me to mentor, train, help young men. I have dealt with both types. The know it all, the I have done it all, the smart alec, the excuse maker, etc have all been part of my training. I have also had the privilege of training wise and just men. They are a pleasure. They make it fun to be in the ministry and easy to help.
The question for you today is, Which are you? How do you deal with instruction and reprove? No one should be able to answer that question better than you. But if you are a scorner they can. Others already know the answer.
Good thought to work on if you really want to be used of God.
