Psalm 119:97 MEM. O how love I thy law! it is my meditation all the day.
The word meditation means “close or continued thought; the turning or revolving of a subject in the mind; serious contemplation” according to Webster’s Dictionary. What do you continue to think? What do you turn over and over in your mind.
The psalmist says that he thinks about the Word of God. He tries to keep it in his mind all day long. He thinks about it in all situations. Here are just a few thoughts he gives in the book of Psalms.
His delight or pleasure is in the law of the Lord. He loves to think about it. Thinking about God’s Word brings him great joy. Psalm 1:2
David realizes that God knows what he is meditating or thinking. Psalm 5:1. I wonder how that would change the thoughts that I allow to run around in my head. He wanted God to be pleased with his thoughts Psalm 19:14.
When he laid awake in his bed he focused his thoughts on the Lord God. He brought his thoughts to bear on the person of God and what He has done, what He wants. Psalm 63:6
He thought about the work of God and what He has done and is doing. Psalm 77:12
Thinking of the Lord and who He is was sweet and made the psalmist heart glad. Psalm 104:34
Apparently he thought about God’s precepts, rules, wishes, commands. He decided that he would find out what God wanted and try to do it. Psalm 119:15
When people tried to harm him and spoke against him rather than think on their attacks the psalmist thought about what God’s Word had to say. Psalm 119:23, Psalm 119:78. I am afraid that I can lose sleep when I think someone is saying bad things about me. I focus on them and what they say not on God and what He says. What about you?
Focusing on the Word of God made the psalmist understand things that even his teachers did not understand. Psalm 119:99
David would choose to meditate on the Word of God instead of sleeping when it was time to sleep Psalm 119:148.
He loved to spend time thinking about God and His work. That was what occupied his mind Psalm 143:5.
As I have read and meditated on the psalmist thinking it has caused me to evaluate my thinking. I can so easily be discourage. I can get in a bad mood because of my thought life. I think things that I shouldn’t. Not that they are bad but I focus on me and my life rather than God and His Word.
Do you have this problem? Would it make a difference if we thought about the Lord Jesus and His Word? Would it make a difference if I didn’t allow me to occupy my thoughts? What do you think?
