Are you doing a great work?

Nehemiah 6:3 And I sent messengers unto them, saying, I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down: why should the work cease, whilst I leave it, and come down to you?

Nehemiah is invited to go to a meeting that will be a waste of his time. He knows that because he is convinced that what he is doing is a great work. He knows that he is serving God.

There are several things that I would like for you to consider.

One, he is not preaching or teaching the Bible here, he is building a wall around Jerusalem. That means that Scripture records the work of a layman as being a great work. You are not a preacher. Somehow you have allowed the devil to convince you that you are now a second class citizen. He simply does that to cause the work to cease.

If you do not see what you are doing in the work of God as important, as a great work, then Satan will have won. He will convince you that you can relax and not continue on. Are you allowing the devil to play with your mind?

Second, have you asked God what your part is in His work? Have you gone to Him with your talents, your resources, your abilities and asked what He wants you to do? I think maybe you feel like a second class citizen or not as important in the work of God because you do not take what you do seriously.

The Bible is full of the stories of people doing all sorts of work that was to the honor and glory of God. Nehemiah builds a wall, Ezra builds a temple, Tyticus writes letters for Paul, Luke writes books of the Bible but is a doctor, Dorcas takes care of poor people, and many more.

Will you today go before God in prayer and meditation and ask Him what He wants you to do? Will you offer Him all that you are and all that you have to serve Him? Will you take seriously your part in the work of God? Don’t be so quick to come down and allow the work of God to cease!
