Deuteronomy 20:19-20 When thou shalt besiege a city a long time, in making war against it to take it, thou shalt not destroy the trees thereof by forcing an axe against them: for thou mayest eat of them, and thou shalt not cut them down (for the tree of the field is man’s life) to employ them in the siege: Only the trees which thou knowest that they be not trees for meat, thou shalt destroy and cut them down; and thou shalt build bulwarks against the city that maketh war with thee, until it be subdued.
In the heat of the moment we often act without thinking. We may do something today that will harm our future and what God has for us.
When God’s people went to war they were to be careful which trees they used even as weapons. Trees that bear fruit give life! Even in the heat of battle they were not to forget this great truth. They were to use only trees that did not bear fruit.
At first glance there may not appear to be much there for you today. You are not in the habit of going to war. You do not besiege cities. So how does this apply.
In the middle of dealing with one problem be careful not to create another. A young girl rebels against her parents by running off with a boy. She gets away from her parents but will wake up with more problems than she had!
In a fit of anger and to defend our honor will may strike out at someone or fight and cause more trouble than we originally had. They happens with “road rage!” Someone cuts you off. You retaliate and end up with a ticket, a wreck, or worse.
So the lesson for today is think before you act. You might be under a great deal of pressure right now but could I ask you to think! Does what you are thinking about doing make sense over the long haul? Will this decision cause you more grief in the future?
Don’t cut down your fruit trees to take over a city that will end up being worthless to you. If you decide to take city, don’t destroy it!
