Genesis 39:9 There is none greater in this house than I; neither hath he kept back any thing from me but thee, because thou art his wife: how then can I do this great wickedness, and sin against God?
Joseph has so much authority and rank in Potiphar’s house that not even Potiphar knows what is going on. Potiphar only worries about the food that he is going to eat. Joseph has been very responsible and taken good care of everything that belongs to his master. His master has prospered because of him.
Now here comes Potiphar’s wife to tempt Joseph. She wants to get into immorality with Joseph. Please notice Joseph’s answer. There is none greater. Basically I can get away with what I want in this house. The master has let me have everything I want.
But how can I sin against God? That is his question. Not can he get away with it. Not would he enjoy it. But would it please God. Would he be sinning against God?
Do you ever have the chance to do things that no one will ever know? Do you think you deserve to do so because of all that you have done or suffered?
There is a great life answer in this verse. We do not do something because we can. We do not something because we will not get caught. We do not do something because we think we deserve it. We do something because it will please God.
We do not avoid certain things because of what men will think or we might get caught but because we do not want to sin against God!
So it doesn’t matter if you could get away with it or not. It only matters if it will please God or not!
