Philippians 4:8 Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Most of us engage in “stinking thinking” rather than what we were commanded to think. Think through this list with me. Then try to put it in practice and see if it makes a difference in your life.
True We are to think on things that are in Biblically correct. Don’t believe the lie of Satan, society or even self.
Honest Things that are serious, worthy of honor!
Just We give to God what belongs to Him and what is true about ourselves. We work at keeping a clear conscience not doing the things that we know would displease our Lord.
Pure Or things that are the opposite of filthiness, foolish talking, obscene words and actions. Thinking about holy things!
Lovely Things that are agreeable, increase love, friendship, gratefulness to God and are lovely in His sight. The opposite of contention, strife, anger, and hatred.
Good report or things that are of a good reputation, good testimony, well spoken of, etc.
Virtue which is the opposite of sin and vice.
Praise or things that deserve to be commended, or thought well of.
This is what we are commanded to meditate on. We are to turn them over in our minds and to serious consider them. The goal is to put them into practice in our lives.
Honestly our thoughts affect us much more than we would ever admit. We allow ourselves to think about the opposite of what is in this list. It causes us to be anxious, to feel like we are being mistreated, unloved, etc. Let us put in practice what we are commanded to think!
