Galatians 3:3 Are ye so foolish? having begun in the Spirit, are ye now made perfect by the flesh?
Everyday another problem that I face. I was saved by the unmerited grace of God. I know that. I realize that He did it all. He sought me and He bought me! He loved me while I was still a sinner Romans 5:8. I would never try to add anything to His grace for my salvation.
I realize that if He had not been good to me that I would not be saved. But then comes the problem. Like the Galatians I started in the Spirit but then I try to become mature or to finish out my salvation by my flesh.
Somehow I begin to think that what I do carries me on to maturity. I forget so often that it is what He did that makes the difference. The one that began this good work in me will carry it out to completion. Philippians 1:6
I simply need to live out what He has done in me. Keeping a list of do’s and don’t’s will not mature me or make Him love me more. I do not need to be circumcised to keep my faith nor do I need to perform any other work. It is entirely by His grace.
The Galatians had fallen into the trap of returning to the weak and beggarly elements of Judaism. They were sure that by honoring certain days etc that God would be pleased. Paul gives them instruction in Galatians 4:7-10 telling them that they are not more servants but sons!
Somehow they had begun to believe that their salvation started by the grace of God but that it finished with their doing right. They had to keep the law to please God. Galatians 5:4-8. It was believing God that made the difference. If they are going to try to please God with something that they do then they have fallen from grace.
Paul would only glory in the fact that Jesus died on the cross for Him and paid His sin debt. Nothing more and nothing less satisfied God.
Do you feel frustrated? Do you feel like you simply can’t be good enough? Do you feel like you do not measure up? Do you try to please God and find yourself failing Him? Is this the source of your spiritual frustration?
You never were supposed to carry so much load! The same way you got saved is the way you continue to please God. It is Him. Trust Him and what He did on Calvary. Look to Jesus. He is not only the author of your faith but the FINISHER!
We started by trusting Him and we will finish the same way!
