1Corinthians 9:19 For though I was free from all men, I brought myself under bondage to all, that I might gain the more.
Paul was free from all men. He could live and be and do as he saw fit. He was an apostle. He had no superiors in rank or privilege. No one paid his salary. He could do as he pleased.
There is much talk about our freedom in Christ and how no one can tell us what to do. We often celebrate the fact that there are no rules and we can live and do as we please. That is true but notice the attitude Paul had about his freedom.
He would become as a Jewish person to the Jews and as person outside the law to those outside the law.
Freedom wasn’t meant for me to have it good but for me to be free to serve. I understand my position in Christ but I desire with all my heart to get the gospel to as many as I can in my lifetime. That will mean that I often limit my freedoms.
Some seem to enjoy their freedoms and want to flaunt them in the face of others to the point of being offensive. There are and have been many who have abused the grace of God. They have brought in a legalistic attitude. They have hurt the cause of Christ with their rules and critical spirits but on the other side of the coin many today are wanting to go to the other extreme.
They tell us that they will have church nothing like grandmother’s church. They will change the way we think about church. They pretty well have done that. They succeed at getting rid of Bible exposition and preaching. They turn church into a show for an hour that doesn’t interfere too drastically with your lifestyle or week.
Both sides are and have been wrong. We must realize that yes we are free. But our freedom is not about our laziness or relaxing our responsibility but rather increasing it.
We have the truth of Jesus Christ and salvation by His grace. We know that we do not have to keep a list of do’s and don’t’s. We can have victory and freedom in Christ but rather than use our freedom for an excuse to enjoy a lazy, good life we will use our freedom to get the gospel to the world.
