Altogether sinful

July 27, 2009 By Austin Gardner Leave a Comment

John 9:34 They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

The man in this story was born blind. Jesus met him and healed him. The religious people of the day hated Jesus. They also hated anyone that was following Jesus.

They ask the man who it is that has healed him. The religious people are looking for any excuse to throw people out of the synagogue. His parents had told the religious leaders that their son was an adult and they should ask him. The tell the blind man to give God that glory and not Jesus because they say that Jesus is a sinner.

The blind man that could now see says I do not know if He is a sinner or not but what I do know is that I couldn’t see before and now I can. They pushed him for an answer about how Jesus had healed him. He tires of their games and says I have already told you what happened and you won’t listen.

They then accuse him of being a disciple of Jesus while they are disciples of Moses. They give no honor to Jesus because they know Moses but do not know Jesus.

The man says that he is surprised that they be such great religious leaders and they do not know the man that was able to heal him and give him his sight.

The man is teaching them in their ignorance and they respond with the verse that is our text today. They say that the once blind man cannot teach them because he was born altogether in sins.

Do you see the picture? The religious people are not saved because they do not see themselves as sinful! This man is sinful and realizes it. He gets help. He gets saved.

One of the greatest problems we have today is that we do not wish to see ourselves as “so sinful!” We might have been born in some sin. We might have a little problem but we aren’t like other people who were born altogether sinful.

Until you realize that you are altogether sinful you cannot be saved. God doesn’t help those that help themselves. Rather He saves, rescues, helps those that cannot help themselves.

Did you ever realize that you were sinful and needed a Saviour? Did you ever recognize your utter depravity and total need of God.

Jesus is not to help the good be better. He is the Saviour of the lost. You will not be truly saved until you realize you are lost and on your way to Hell!

Were you ever altogether sinful?
