Luk 12:15 And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.
Somewhere along the way we fell for a lie. We began to believe that what we have defines who we are! We believe that things make us happy. The propaganda machine keeps this idea churning in our hearts. If only I had that I would be happy.
Jesus took a strong stand against covetousness. This is a sin that is almost totally undiscussed in our churches or lives. Actually much of our modern Christianity would promote covetousness. God wants to give us things! God wants to bless us by making us rich.
You can see if God is blessing someone by how much they have! Have you fallen for the lie?
In the story a man comes to Jesus and says, tell my brother to give me by share of the inheritance. Jesus says that He is not a judge or divider of inheritances and then proceeds to say you need to understand that life is not about what you have.
Why are we all in so much debt? What makes this recession much worse than any other?
Could it be that they sold us a lie? They told us to spend and spend and not worry about tomorrow. They told us that things would make us happy. We bought it all. We knew that eventually we could pay for it. We knew that having these things made us successful and made us a magnet for more things and wealth.
What a lie! Now people are losing their homes, their things, their dignity, and it hurts all around.
Now the words of Jesus should carry even more weight with us! Life is not about what you have. We do not determine who is successful based on how many toys they have. A simpler life may actually end up being the one with less stress and the one that makes it through these hard times.
The Bible speaks harshly about this sin of covetousness. Would you decide today to change your focus from things to the Lord Jesus Christ? Would you decide that serving the Lord Jesus is far more important than the new toys?
Don’t let the media deceive you! It is not about stuff. It is about living a life in obedience to the Word of God and the Lord Jesus Christ!
