Mark 10:35 And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, come unto him, saying, Master, we would that thou shouldest do for us whatsoever we shall desire.
Have you ever noticed where this verse is found? I mean in relation to those around it!
First, notice what it says. We want you to do whatever we want you to do for us!
In the verse right before this one Jesus is telling them that He is about to suffer! He is going to be condemned to die. He is going to be beaten, spit on, and killed. Mark 10:33-34
They have the audacity to say to Him immediately after hearing His future-well we are really more worried about ourselves than you! We didn’t hear what you just said. We don’t care what you just said. We just want you to do for us!
Wow! Maybe I am reading that wrong. I welcome you to go read it and tell me if I misread it!
He finished telling them about what was coming. They then say well we want you to do somethings for us!
His response is, what do you want me to do for you? What a bunch of ingrates!
What can I say? I know that I am much more guilty than they are! I read the Bible to find promises for me. I want to know what is in it for me. I am afraid that we as American Christians have learned to read the Bible like a catalog of toys for us! We do not realize that God might just have a plan and a will for us that isn’t about us!
This verse has knocked me for a loop today! I can’t believe how insensitive and unfeeling they were. It makes me realize just how much I do the same thing. I feel so little love for Him and all that He has done.
I read the Bible and I only think about me. What is in it for me? How can I? How can I be blessed?
What happened to take up your cross and come die with me? What happened to it is not about you? What happened to serving Him?
God forgive me for my selfish, arrogant, prideful attitude! Forgive me for not paying attention to you and what you want.
I want to think about you and what you are doing.
