Where do you find your joy?

Habakkuk 3:17-19 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vines; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls: Yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will joy in the God of my salvation. The LORD God is my strength, and he will make my feet like hinds’ feet, and he will make me to walk upon mine high places.

Literally everything is going wrong. Nothing at all is working out. The fig trees have totally failed. There will be hunger.

The fruits will not grow. The fields will not produce. The animals are gone. Literally everything that can go wrong is going wrong.

That sounds a lot like what is happening to many in the USA right now. The housing market has crashed. The stock market is in major trouble. The country is making great political mistakes right now. Banks are closing over 40 so far.

The government can’t pay its own bills, is printing new money and still laying people off.

These are very uncertain times. If you listen to the news you will want to panic. Fear will take hold of your heart. Our pride is threatened.

We were once strong but now are losing everything. It is embarrassing. We thought we had it under control. We believed that it was all going to be fine. We thought we were insulated from any harm.

After all we have fig trees, grapes, olives, grain fields, animals and more. Even if one fails the others will succeed. Now look at us. It has all failed.

But the prophet gives us the godly attitude. We are not to rejoice in how smart we are or how we have protected ourselves. We are not to rejoice in our prosperity but rather rejoice in the Lord.

All is gone. The prophet says that he can still rejoice in: the Lord God of Heaven. We are saved, born again. We have the God of our salvation.

We were never our own strength. He was our strength and we still have Him. We were never supposed to rejoice in the gifts and toys that He had given us but in Him.

This is a great time to help us get our priorities right. We may lose everything but we will still be very rich. We are born again.

If we have to live in a small apartment and work menial jobs we will be fine. We know God.

He is the one who has done all the good in our lives anyway. I challenge you today to refocus. I know you are going to tell me that you know this and already think it but you really don’t. we have allowed things to get our attention.

He is our strength. He is our Lord and Master. We are not here for ourselves or even our families. We are here for Him.

Let’s rejoice in the Lord!
